i have bought some primed frames that are cotton, and want to paint some jungle characters for my sons bedroom.
Can watercolour paints be used or will the cotton canvas nt be absorbent enough?

Actually there is a specific canvas made by Fredricks called Fredricks Archival Water Color Canvas, which is ready made canvas stretched with a ground that is specifically designed for watercolor. it is different than regular canvas gesso and can be bought at the best price from www.misterart.com

If you cant return the canvas that you have, use
Liquitex Stucco medium and spread a thin layer of that over the canvass. It has the absorbency of paper when dry for 24 hours, and will allow your water colors to flow. I use this often to get washes and a water color effect on buildings and walled courtyards in my paintings.
go to www.artchannelgalleries.com to see an example. Look at the painting: La Patisserie by g. cook

Yes, no problem.

You need to sand down the canvas and apply a fresh, smooth layer of gesso. The result however will be distinctly different from paper but the colors will turn out more vibrant.

Be sure to use 'Gum Arabic' to make sure your paint does not flow all over the canvas.

yes you can. there isnt really such a thing as an acrylic canvas you can use the oil/watercolor ones and it works like a charm. you can even use canvas paper and stretch it because acrylic is a plastic. just remember...never put acrylic on oil paint!! :) :)

If you want to paint with water color, use water color paper. Otherwise, gesso the canvases and use acrylic paint.

nope its better to use acrylic paint or oil... & water colour there is always this fear of it fading away slowly with time! i would rather opt for acrylic as it dries away rapidly whereas oil takes 1-2weeks!
