These occur when there is a sort of chemical imbalance in the muscle. The best way to avoid them is to drink lots of water, both in day to day life and when you're working out.

Charley horses can be avoided several ways. Stay well hydrated. Make sure you get enough potassium every day (green peas, baked potatoes, Gatorade, apple cider vinegar as a salad dressing or mix it with honey and drink it.) You can drink tonic water if you can stand the bitterness. Ask your doctor about quinine pills. And this one works for me every time I get a charley horse: rub the area with apple cider vinegar. Bingo! It's gone!

I do'nt know how to prevent a charlie horse, I do'nt know if any body does, but the best way to get rid of it is to walk it out. It's going to hurt like hell, but you have to get up on your feet and walk it on out. You'll feel a whole lot better!

To avoid leg cramps, it's important to keep your legs warm.
If they happen at night, even though it's summer and you may have air conditioning on or a fan, remember to keep your legs covered at night.
Drink eight ounces of Gatorade or Sport Drink before you go to bed. It rehydrates and helps with avoiding cramps.
If you should get one, get up and walk it off and stretch it out.
If it is severe and persistant, take your fist and punch the muscle that is in cramp. It shocks the muscle and forces release.
Good luck to you !

To prevent it, drink lots of water and eat food high in potassium, like bananas. (I don't know why, it just works!) To get rid of it stand up and walk around. It's hard to get started but it goes away right away!

It's lack of potassium that makes them. You need to eat more potatoes.
I usually have someone pull down on my toes to make my leg straight, then pant, and try to relax. If I'm alone, I rub the back of my leg, while trying to point my toes to make my leg straight, and panting to relax. Of course, crying out to Jesus, and asking Him to heal me, works too.
