If it has meaning behind it, I don't think it is too vain. I have a good friend who designed a tattoo with his name in it, but it is intertwined into a larger design.
If you feel like it would be vain, or that others would percieve it as vain (which many people probably will), you should go with something that represents you, rather than your own name, or create a design by yourself or with a tattoo artist that has your name embedded in it, but is not the main piece.
Here are a couple of name tattoos that have a creative edge:

Good luck, and remember, you're going to have the tattoo forever, so make sure it is something that will still have meaning for you in 20, 30 or 40 years from now.

You can get anything you want on a tattoo. The question is... shoud you? While younger folks tend to think it's ok to have tattoos, an employer will think otherwise. Even in low paying retail and fast food jobs, most have some sort of dress code, and that means covering up tattoos.
Do you envision folks shaking your hand and introducing themselves and you just pointing to your wrist?
The urge to tattoo is strong, and I have visited the parlours 6 times for body art (but all hidden in normal clothing) and had eyeliner and lips and a beauty mark done as a permanent cosmetic. I get it. Just put some time into thought as to why you want it, how this may affect your image next year, the year after, etc. and consider these two items: some folks may consider it your lover's name, and possibly, you won't always want everyone to know your name. It happens in life, beleive me.

That does sound a little to vain; in fact, its never a good idea to get a name tattoo. A better solution would be a Shelley Jackson tattoo (a tattoo of one word that best describes you/how you relate to yourself). I know it may sound dumb, but trust me, many people have done it.

My best friend has her name on the swell of her back in Old English letters. I don't find that it looks bad but I wouldn't have gotten it as big as her.
As far as how it looks to have your own name on your body, I know lots of people that have it. If you want it, go for it. It's your own body and your own money paying for the tattoo, don't let anyone else sway your opinion on what you want to put on yourself. In my opinion, I would get creative and put it in graffiti letters or some other way to make it look like a picture instead of just your name.

I have a tattoo on the back of my neck in chinese characters. Very few people know what it means, cause its a religious statement. So I usually tell people that it's my name if I dont feel like explaining it to them. I usually receive a positive response. But chinese characters are interesting to look at. as long as your not getting your name tattooed on your neck, I see no problem with it.
Have you ever thought of putting it in a differant language??

I don't like the idea, first thing that comes to mind is are you planning on forgetting your name or something. If I were to do anything with my name, I would look up the meaning for my name, which mine is princess, and I would put a crown.

I don't see why not. If you tattoo someone else's name and then you break up with them you have to remove it, this way you never have to worry about that.

That's something that you're going to have to decide on your own. It's not something I would get tattooed on myself personally but if that's what you really want then whatever floats your boat...
