There are many cool things to do and things that are one time only. Go to newyork.going.com to get an idea of some things going on.

Since you will be working, probably some of these evening parties you will find on this site will fit your schedule.

This is a great site for one time events. Stuff that is different from going to see plays or shopping at Macys...same old stuff.

have a great time!

How old are you and what are your interests?
I can only answer from my point of view, mother of two, 48 years old and single.
We love to go to the "Musum of Natural History", the "Hayden Paneteriium"the "Holographic Museum". the "Bronx Zoo"
the "Empire State Building", For free try going to "Toys are Us " in Times Square". Central Park is beautiful and vast.
Oh, a pointer, few people know this but the Museum of Natural History clearly states that to go in is a donation, do not let them cahrge you for admission. Give them a dollar. The Planeterium is privately owned and has an admission, so pay for that tix serparately.... do NOT pay for the Museum.
Read the sign carefully and you will see what i mean. MOMA is also nice and so is Grand Central Terminal. Go to China Town, Soho, and Canal Street..... Little Italy (however small it has gotten ) is also wonderful. There are street fairs every weekend, In Brooklyn there is the Aquarium and Coney Island. Take the F train to Coney Island.

Look at Time Out NY. If it is as good as the London one it will be a thorough look at everything that is on including critic's choice.

Walking shoes and the mini 'Rough guide to New York City were my essentials. Here's an online guide if you do not want to invest in a book for a couple of days travel.

You must see a show. We were told this and did it begrudgingly on the first night and then ended up going to three others in the week we were there. We queued for cheap tickets but having only a couple of days it might be worth looking for cheap ways to do this online. Just remembered I tried to convince someone else of the joys of New York, here's my lazy cut and paste:

There is so much going on, grand scale shows, (boy can they do musicals and comedy and don't let any theatre snob tell you they can't do drama) and striking little ones off-off broadway, world famous landmarks (more than you know you know), delighting in listening to New Yoik accents (don't expect to hear them in cabs), the view from the Empire State building (arrive before it opens or late), the array of things in and the very existence of Central Park, dancing on the 'Big' keyboard in FAO Schwartz (toyshop), walking the bridge, spotting locations from great films, (Mr Staypuft's grand entrance was my personal favourite), great range of food, the real and present danger that you could break your neck on the Cyclone rollercoaster at Coney Island (seriously), open air concerts in small parks.
That was all dredged up from 3 years ago.
It made an impression.

Hope you enjoy it.

Go see a film or TV show being made. Last year there were 246 movies filmed entirely or in part in NYC. NYC Government, Mayors Office of Film, Theater, and Broadcasting, has a sight that shows where film and TV series have been shot and there are tours taking you to varies filming locations.

Look online at various News sites to see what's coming up in the area.

ny1.com
wnbc.com
7online.com
nytimes.com
timeoutny.com
nyc.gov ( for more info and links)

Enjoy yourself. Try to get tickets to a Broadway Show and dine at a great restaurant. Bring plenty of money and try to avoid showing cash around. Bring comfortable shoes for walking.
