I'm hoping to do a degree in Public health and Social work. My aim is to become a Public health promoter plus do Social work. I would also like to help out in the treatment area (maybe part time or even volunteer), but I do not hope to get in to nursing. Is there a way for me to do this without becoming a nurse?.
I really want to help people, that is why I'm getting into Social work and Public health.
Help!. Thanks!

you could try a caregiver course which is just about 6 months and less hassle than nursing. that way you will be allowed to deal with medical cases in treatment areas.

You could consider entering the field of medical social work. It sounds like a good fit for your interests. Medical social workers are actually better paid that most of those whose focus is in other concentrations. In order to be really marketable in this field, you should obtain an MSW. Despite the low pay, social work is a rather competitive field. If you get a BSW, most universities will put you in an advanced placement MSW program, and you can get your MSW in one year instead of two. Also, as a requirement of most social work programs, you will need to volunteer for a certain number of hours. You usually do a rather lengthy internship your last semester of your BSW. If you decide to go this route, the social work department at your school will be able to match you up with an agency for your volunteer work and internships.

I don't know where you live or plan to go to school, but I have added a link for the University of Houston's social work program's website that describes the concentration of Health Care or Medical social work. You won't start to focus on your concentration area until you enter your master's program, but you could do your BSW internship at an agency where medical social work is the focus.

Good luck with your future. It's great that you have chosen to make helping others your caree. I have a BSW and really enjoyed my classes and love being able to make a difference. Sometimes, that's much more rewarding that a huge paycheck!

A BA in psychology will not get you into social work it gets you into psychology. A BSW will get you into social work.

You might look at volunteer work in such areas as planned parenthood or other sex education/disease prevention programs (usually have many part-time and volunteer opportunities. You college health clinic may have a program like this and/or club that works toward health promotion. You might also contact local k-12 schools and see if they have programs and need volunteers. Also youth service agencies (B&G, YM/WCA, etc) sometimes have programs. Also contact the local health department near your school and see if they have any programs. Other areas that tend to focus on promotion (anti-smoking, lead poisoning, Obesity, substance abuse (this one is also likely to have lots on your campus to get involved with. DA

If you want to get into Social work then all you need is a BA in Psychology. Be aware that Social work is underpaid and very hard. The turn over rate is very high. However, if you have the calling then I can tell you that you would be welcomed because everywhere is in need of a good social worker.
