I wear glasses, but if I take them off and squint my eyes so much that if I scrunched them up any more they'd be closed, I can see almost as well as I can with them. Why does this happen?

Thank you!

Have you ever been to the the eye doctor's office and they have you read the eye chart? Then they give you this thing to hold up over your eye with a lot of tiny pin holes in it? They tell you to concentrate on one hole and read the chart again through it? Most people will improve on the eye chart by at least a line or two...when you block out a lot of the distracting light and are looking through just a small area, it improves your vision.

I wear glasses too, mostly for driving at night...I can squint myself down to almost 20/20 to read the signs if I really try, but by the time I do, I'm on top of the sign or past it...not a safe way to drive...

The lens in your eye is improperly shaped, so it focuses things just in front or just behind the retina at the back of the eye. What should focus to a point appears as a small blob. If you look through only a tiny part of the lens by nearly closing your eyes this blob is much smaller. Also pressing on the eye may change its shape enough to achieve better focus

try to keep your glasses on as long as you can the scrunching will eventually lead to headaches

because you are reducing the aperture through which you look you are also reducing the area of blur around the object you are gazing at, so whilst technically it is still out of focus, because you've 'cropped' the blur around it, it becomes much more legible.

also,if you curl your pointing finger round to make a tiny hole, then look throught the hole, (hold your hand up to your eye)you can see perfectly clear too. I don't know why this happens, but its amazing.

Because you are focusing your eyes so much. I would'nt reccomend doing so though it will lead to headaches and damage your eyes. =]
