Go to www.snopes.com. It won't do a thing to gas prices.

Exxon and Mobile are the same company. In the past I have heard people suggest that we should go a day without buying gas and that would teach the oil companies. I don't think that would work. As you suggested, if everyone refused to buy from just one of the oil companies, that would really hurt them and it would get the attention of the other oil companies. Even tho I think Exxon has a great product, I have already switched to another gas producer for the reason that you stated. If you bring one oil company to its knees, it will get the attention of the others.

It won't work.

Exxon refines gas for all brands of gasoline. The additive is added at what is called the "rack". It is only the additive that differentiates one fuel from another (that includes non-branded gas).

Here is how it works:

The gas is refined by a major oil company (Exxon, Shell etc)that owns refineries. They produce raw gasoline. That gasoline is sent out to the local markets to the various racks around the nation. The tanker trucks go to the rack to get fuel for the gas stations when an order is placed. While at the rack the tanker is filled with the raw fuel plus the additive that makes it Exxon (or Shell or Texaco etc.). If the gas is unbranded, a generic additive is mixed in. After the tanker is filled they take it to your local station where you pay for the fuel after a very small mark-up is added by the gas station owner.

As you can see, boycotting Exxon will do very little to Exxon because you are still buying gas that they refined.

If you are going to boycott, how will you know it? Which stations BUY gas from exxon, or Mobil? Does it matter if you do not go to Exxon, yet buy gas from a company that they supply? Does Exxon STILL not get the profit? Just a few questions for all of you that are trying to boycott.

Will never happen. A better idea would be converting your present powertrain to run on LPG, using off the shelf tech',
and it can be made from DOMESTIC Natural Gas and not
FOREIGN petrol. Instead of sticking together with gasoline
convert to LPG so you can stick up just your middle finger at
gas companies.

I haven't bought Exxon gas since 1984, and I won't ever again. Since the merger I don't buy Mobil either. Contrary to what Snopes says, if we all did this, the oil companies would be on their knees in six months.

I've boycotted Exxon ever since Exxon Valdez, so about 18 years now. When they acquired Mobile, I stopped using that one, too.
