Our house was recently broken in to and there is a smudge of a red substance on a dresser drawer...the police said it was too dark to be blood, but I am a nurse and I know what red blood looks like. How can I find out if it is blood without taking it to a lab? I thought about hydrogen peroxide but I wasn't sure.

Aside from taking the sample to the lab for analysis, there exists no way to determine its actual content with certainty. Note that blood is simply a protein-rich fluid whose red color is given by the hemoglobin, basically an oxide of iron. Regarding the claim made by the police that the stain was too dark to be blood, it is worthy to note that the color of the sample would be governed by its original oxygen content as well as the amount of time it has been exposed to air.
