You know, God also told Adam if he ate of the forbidden fruit that he would die that same die. Adam ate it and Lo and Behold, he lived for 900 something years.

The other "gods" are false gods. They have no power. The one true God does not want us to waste our time worshiping gods that cannot do anything for us. The one true God does not need human worship; however, He wants to have a personal relationship with us. The other gods do not care about humanity because they are not real and cannot care about humanity. The one true God cannot be an outcast because He is the only one.

I don't think so. I think he just knows that people can make a god out of anything and that's what he meant. This God created all things and he doesn't want people to worship the things he made instead of him.

No.
People turn things into Gods by putting them above the true God. Pagan "Gods" have no power to help anyone or do anything, so why would we bother worshipping them?

It does show that the man that wrote that knew there were others gods being worshipped and he wanted to control that.
So he wrote as if he were god.
Pagan Gods have power. Believe what you will when you say they don't. Your belief came from the pagan belief. I'm speaking to the first answerer here.

Because they are not alive and have no power.
Actually, whatever you place highest priority in your life is your god. For some it is TV, money, sports, video games. Satan is the secret god of many. He disguises himself as idols of gods that people worship.
Is there any doubt why the Creator, Almighty God, Jehovah wants undivided loyalty? He alone is deserving of such worship as He is the only one who has created everything.

God was referring to the useless gods that man invents. Like the golden calf. Man would take wood and make an idol and use the left-over to warm his house. What power could that idol have.

The word "god' here should be interpreted in the context of the other passages in the Bible which speak of false gods which the people made for themselves as idols.

Yes, sort of like the golden calf that Aaron (Moses' brother) had the people construct when Moses was in the mountain for 40 days and 40 nights constructing the ten commandments.
Tell me, could the calf they created answer prayer?

A better translation would be "don't put anything of greater importance than Me." Money, drugs, sex, idols, other 'gods' - these are all things God was talking about.
