We have a keeshond puppy, born in January '07. The first few nights when we got her (a month ago), she woke a couple of times a night. We took her out to do her business and put her right back in the crate. Then she started sleeping through until 5:30am - ish, which was great (since it wasn't every two hours). But, now she's still waking up at 5am, which is miserable. We take up her food an water around 7pm, play with her until she's tired in the evening, watch some TV and put her to bed when we go to bed, around 11pm. But, even when we keep up up until midnight, or put her to bed at 10pm ... it's the same story ... up at 5am. *yawn* She's in an area that doesn't get morning sun, we've recently made that switch to see if darkness would help. Any advice for us?

She's in a crate at night (and when we're out of the house), but during the day she's largely with us and awake (some napping, but no long sleeps).

It sounds like she already has established her schedule. You dont say if she is in a pen or not, but the only way I would recommend you go now, is not jump when she wakes up. Your puppy should fit into your home environment and flow, (although like a child they have needs that need to be taken care of), but she is already used to you willing to be awake when she is awake. Putting her in a darker area will not help since it is her internal clock thats ticking. I dont know if you have a doggy crate with a crate cover, but I personally whould recommend one since putting the crate cover over her crate and taking it off in the morning would certainly help getting her onto your schedule.

Something else I can add in here, if you go to her crate in the morning and you act all excited to see her, this may also be a reason that she wakes you up early in the morning - just to get you there. I have a little ShiPoo (ShiTzu Poodle) mix who is not crated and she would come to my bedroom door very early in the morning and bark until I would get out of bed and then drag myself outside only to watch her do nothing. I started by getting a crate and a crate cover as well as setting my alarm for a later time and would make a point of not getting out of bed until my alarm went off. Noodle has now stopped 'calling' me in the morning until she hears my alarm. It is hard to just lay there in the beginning and hear the dog barking or trying to get your attention. But persistance paid off.

First off, I had the same question more or less on here a little while ago (link below).

I'd try putting the dog in the same room with you and then she'll hopefully settle down. That's what's worked for me out of all the suggestions I've gotten. Check out the link.

Time seems to be the only thing that will help. We went through the same thing with our dog. Didn't matter how long we were up, or how much we played with her and it was harder for me because I work 3 shifts. As she got older, she got better. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Good Luck
