The last issue of the Air Scoop - which is the base newspaper for LRAFB - that I picked up at the VA quoited the base commander as saying that airmen were going to have a greater and more active role in base protection both in regards to the perimeter and in the area that could be used by enemy indirect fire support. He was supportive of a new retraining program for combat skills. So in that you may be right. But I do not foresee a ground force projection role for the USAF.

Some Air Force personnal have always been ground fighters. However, since the Air Force is usually about fighter jets, there are a lot of Air Force personnel who HAVE to be kept behind the lines to service the jets. We were trained to do our jobs in chemical suits and we were also trained in the M16 because historically the aircraft maintenance sites have been attacked both on the ground and in the air by the enemy forces. Still, aircraft maintenance personnel will never be in the forefront of a battle because they need to launch, recover and repair the fighter jets.

Nearly right. It appears the goal is to make them capable of at least surviving on the ground without needing twice their own number of Army or Marines there to protect them. I doubt you'll see a great many Airmen used primarily in ground combat. Makes sense to me.

I know security forces are in Iraq, but since the Air Force is reducing its force by about 30K, I seriously doubt it. If they can't get ground pounders in the Army what makes them think it will be any better in the Air force.
