I've read the other 18 answers. Some good. Some not. You can read it on your own with prayer, but still not get the sense of it.
I recommend the cheapest, best way to go is go to www.watchtower.org and click the spot for a free home Bible study. In less than six months you will have a basic understanding of the Bible. The teacher will make sure you understand thoroughly all main points and whatever question you ask. Sometime they may have to go research to find the answer, but they will get it.
That would be the best suggestion. Then you can do what you want once you have learned.

I have a good study Bible.(Nelson's Complete Study System.) There are footnotes at the bottom of each page that walk you through each and every text.........every sentence, every word for that matter, explaining just what it means. There are other study Bibles but it is my opinion that the Nelson's study Bible is the best. It is expensive ($20+) but well worth the money! I know Preachers who use this Bible to help them!
I teach Sunday School and a Bible Study Group. I always pray for understanding and that we will leave with a better understanding of Gods word after having studied. I pray that this helps!

If you study the History of Civilization it will provide you with a better understanding of the people who wrote it. During Biblical times the illiteracy rate was 99%. The people who wrote it didn't have a clue as to what was going on and they misinterpreted many things that they didn't have the knowledge to understand. That's why there are so many mistakes. How did Noah get to the Amazon Rain Forest to gather many of the 1 million different species of insects?

Do you really want to know if the Bible is the word of God? Here is a time-tested method for uncovering the mystery of the Word of God: "the child of God (that's me) takes the Word of God (the Scriptures) into the presence of God (prayer) and lets the Holy Spirit of God (the Author) make that Word come to life for me and, more importantly, in me."
Another advice: if you want to prove to yourself or anyone else that the Bible is the Word of God, then I suggest you put the teaching of Jesus on forgiveness into practice. Forgive everyone, especially the people who have hurt you the most. If you find it difficult to forgive, ask God to help you forgive them. Pray for this every day, for weeks, even months until you can honestly say to yourself that you have forgiven them. Forgive also yourself - for the things you did and did not do. I guarantee you a miracle will happen in your life. If there is no miracle, come back to me and say the Bible is not the Word of God. I will believe you.
Peace and every blessing!

I agree with the earlier answer. Take a course from a non-relgious school. My school had somethng like Bible 101, which introduced me to many different books of the bible, different schools of thought and got me knowing what I was interested in. Good luck!
PS The ABOVE ANSWER IS TOO LONG. NOT MINE THE OTHER GUY

1. Prayer
2. Compare Scripture with Scripture (a reference Bible is helpful)
3. Get yourself a good Bible believing church, and get under the preaching. (http://www.db.gracealone.com)
2. Get a good Bible Commentary (e.g. Matthew Henry)
3. Read through a good summary on systematic theology (e.g. The Westminster Shorter Catechism - is for beginners)

Ask God to open your mind as you read... take it slow and start with what you can understand first. I like Proverbs. It was a good book to make me think about life. There are 31 chapters in Proverbs... like some months have 31 days. Read a chapter a day... and then when you are ready... move on to something else.
The Bible is shallow enough to wade in and deep enough to swim in. Take your time.

Sit under anointed teachings as much as you can. Get to know the Holy Spirit well so that He can guide you in your study of the Word and also gives you revelation of the Word as you pray for understanding and direction. We need the revelation of the Word to increase our faith (Romans 10:17).

When you want to get close to God you read bible. God who sees your heart will grant His gift of Holy Spirit if you ask Him.
But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. John 14:26
Holy Spirit will make you understand it without any error.
