I would prepare and cook fresh fish the same day I bought it.
It may last longer safely but I don't risk it.
Also, fresh fish (salmon, in particular, is what I usually buy) does not actually have a smell until it starts to turn. That "fishy smell" doesn't occur in truly fresh fish.
Ask to smell the fish before you buy it...really.

Good for you! Fresh fish will have much more flavor than frozen. If the fish is fresh when you buy it from the store, it will last three days in the refrigerator. It should not have a fishy smell when you buy it at the store. It is a good idea to develop a relationship with the people who work behind the fish counter. Ask them what is fresh, what just came in that day, where the fish is from, etc. Also, any decent fish market will indicate on the signs which fish has been previously frozen so you will know not to refreeze again. Once cooked, the fish will last an additional two days, for instance, if you make a chowder with it.

LOOKS LIKE MOST POPLE GOT YOUR QUESTION WRONG.
YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW HOW LONG CAN YOUR GROCER KEEP FRESH FISH, RIGHT?
I understand that you are worried about buying "fresh fish" that is already going off.
I know it is a concern for us all, but simply feel the fish for firmness, not frozenness, and smell the fish. It should not smell fishy, also remember that fresh fish have a slippery lining on the scales, especially fresh water fish.

Well I think I heard before you can buy fish for up to 2 days in the fridge before. Honestly, myself I always make a point to buy it the same day just because I am so nervous about it going bad in the fridge! That way I know I am going to use it right when I get back from the shop.

You're braver than me Tara. From the fish counter, it needs to be refridgerated as soon as you get it home and eaten within a couple of days. Don't be altogether fooled though.....some of the stuff in the seafood dept maybe have already been frozen and thawed out again and is masquerading as 'fresh', so don't ever freeze fish from the seafood dept yourself.

1. Look at the gills. They should be bright red, not dullish brown. The staff should show them to you if you ask
2. Eyes should be bright, like real eyes.
As for keeping them fresh, better to eat 'em up at once.

3 days... just like visitors to your home. After the 3 days, just throw them out. :)
