YES!! You are on track!
The number '666' refers to nothing more or less than MONEY! A book I read proves this fact without a shadow of a doubt. Read excerpt below for proof:
Look carefully at the actual text and you will note that John did not write “666 (“six hundred threescore and six”) IS the mark of the beast, nor did he say “666” is the NUMBER of the beast. He specifically and purposefully wrote that the number “666 corresponded to” the “number of the beast which is the NUMBER of a MAN, and his number is six hundred threescore and six.” Neither did John say: “..is the number of man (as in ‘mankind’),” but he specifically wrote: “…is the number of a man,” meaning A particular man.
That particular man to whom John was pointing those “who hath understanding,” is Solomon. “His number” corresponds to “money,” as in the amount of “gold” he received in a one-year period:
“Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold.” (I Kings 10:14)
There is not a person in this world that has not ALREADY received the “mark of the beast” in his or her “right hand”—not one!
Jewish custom taught that what one does with one’s “right hand” is a reflection of the actions one makes in his daily life. What one thinks and focuses upon, is represented by a “mark” in the “forehead. ”The greatest portion of our waking hours are spent in pursuit (“mark in right hand”) of the lifestyle...we have imagined in our minds (“mark in their foreheads”)....

Yes, 666 refers to money!
666 is referring to the amount of money [gold] that "a man" received in one year.
Revelation 13:18
Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
I Kings 10:14
Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold.
Your personal study of the Old Testament has led you to see what many overlook. You therefore draw conclusions that use common sense instead of fantasy or illusion.
"To fully and properly comprehend his [John's] message, one must approach it from John’s point of reference. John has two main points of reference from which he formulated his thoughts and words into the presentation of his message: 1) The truth, or reality, and 2) The Old Testament. From these two points of reference came John’s entire message, as all the symbolism and figurative expressions used by him can be found in Old Testament writings, which were the only
form of written scripture available in his day."p.55
"The book of Daniel is a favorite of John,as he borrows much of the symbolism from it to describe his vision." p.77
"Much of John’s symbolism comes from the book of Ezekiel. He also uses numerical and mathematical symbolism, taking much of this from the book of Daniel. Almost all of John’s symbolism was borrowed from the only source of scripture he had in his day—the Old Testament."p.99
These statements come from a book that explains the Beast and 666 in simple terms.
"666 america the seat of the beast, the apostle john's revelation unfolded"

666, is also 600+60+6. I know this is obvious, but it opens up the possibility that it's a code thay some say means and refers to the Emperor Nero, who send John to Patmos.
My interpretation is that a leader of the whole world will declare himself to be God, his false priest will set up an image of him in the rebuilt Temple of Jerusalem, and his number will be the physical proof that a person is a communicant in his false universal church, and that those who don't take it will not be able to participate in society, religion, or economics; and would eventually become martyrs.
BTW, his scenario isn't as wild as it sounds. Nero did send a decree to Jerusalem ordering his statue to be placed in the Holy of Holies, But, he was ovethrown and a faster ship was sent to nullify the decree. which would have been an instant rebellion.

No.
It is imperfection [ No.6] emphasised three times.
A comparison is when Jesus was asked how many times you should forgive. jesus replied ' Seventy times seven.'
And seven is a perfect number, as it is emphasised in the seven congregations mentioned in Revelation.
