There's a major difference between popping upstairs to get something and leaving your kids while you go for a meal in a different building. If I am upstairs I can hear my kids - I can't if I'm in a restaurant up the road! It's impossible to be literally by your childs side 24/7, but it's not the same as leaving them entirely alone for long periods of time.

No, but those examples you gave are not as serious as leaving a kid while you go out to eat. Why? Because the kids are still in your sight, really - if a kidnapper came into your house while you take some rubbish to the bin, I think I'd notice him/her, wouldn't you?
With the Maddy situation, they claim they were near where they were staying while they ate, but not close enough to see a kidnapper go into the kids' rooms. That's why it was wrong, and why we 'judge', as you say.
I don't have any kids to leave on their own (I'm only 16!!), but when I was a young one, I was never left on my own for a minute, even if it was my older-by-5-years sister who was supervising me.

totally agree theyre have been times when my little girl had been in her toy room while i hang out washing etc and i have came back and found i had accidentally left her safety gate open even though she is safe i get that heart in my mouth feeling of what could have happened so if she had fallen down the stairs would that have been my fault and therefore make me evil and irresponsible or did i just make a mistake that luckily i dont have to pay the price for i wouldnt have done what the mccanns did but i am neither in a position to judge nor is the time to judge them

if you think taking the rubbish out or nipping upstairs in your own home is the same as leaving 3 toddlers alone in a foreign country an sodding off out for dinner is the same you have the problem.
fact is the maccanns and friends had probably had this little group abandonment going all week and any fool watching would no those kids were alone and plan to slip and nick one....and they did and even though one of the group saw her go still didnt click their children were alone and vulnerable till too late.
your question is stupid i will judge them they were wrong. if they had come out of their apartment and drowned in the pool we would be prosecuting them....we still should

People do not leave their kids in unsafe situations or what could be dangerous or unsafe conditions.
Strange country, strange bed,
door unlocked while away eating.
No sorry you not throwing that on me.
They are irresponsible and now want us to give money to keep them there.
I dont feel sorry for them. I wish the child back safe. But they deserve to go through the heartache.
I sure Maddie is with someone taking good care of her now

people are very concerned about the child, maybe the parents should have been. The public will be paying the price for their mistake somehow and we are all entitled to our opinion. They could have used a babysitter, if the children had all been burned to death in a fire because they weren't there you'd be feeling anger towards them, whichever way you look at it they aren't fit parents. Also this was in a foreign country, what were they thinking!!?? All because they wanted to go out for dinner without the kids, selfish and stupid!!!
