To test some new components or materials, they put them in a loop and do the flow test - typical parameters studied will be corrosion, erosion, vibrations if applicable etc. The loop can be hot or cold. I am giving below a typical statement about flow loop.

"The flow loop provides research and development opportunities in other pipeline areas, such as cathodic protection, pipeline reference temperatures, flow conditions, component performance, and compressor behavior."

Sounds like a test for the flow of loops - or maybe how well milk flows through fruit loops. They have to test that you know. If the milk can't make it throught he holes, there would be serious repercussions.
