So they could beat a cunning, organised and highly discleplined army hiding in the jungles and mountains of Vietnam, when they cannot defeat a disperced, badly organised group in an open desert?

Good luck.

American military is very good at fighting large enemy armies but like the Soviet and British armies before it, cannot hope to win a determined gurrilla war.

No. The fact that Vietnam is mostly jungle makes technology useless. Fighting in the jungle requires patrols of soldiers on foot and jungles are perfect for ambushes and booby traps. Vietnam also has a population of over 80 million now compared to around 20 million when they were fighting the US. Added to this a war in Vietnam would most likely cause tens of thousands of American casualties and the American public would not tolerate this, even many right wing Republicans wouldnt support this

No dude, it's not a matter of technology: an invading nation can win only when the defenders surrender or die completely. Failing these, victory is impossible. That's why we couldn't/can't defeat Vietnam, and why England couldn't defeat us.

*update* Alright, just had to correct a little misinformation: Vman 204, we were not fighting to protect French land in the 60s: France had already pulled out, and we were fighting to prevent Vietnam from becoming Communist and thus allying with the Soviet Union. God, I hate when people speak with authority on subjects of which they are completely ignorant...

Technology couldn't do it than, fighting a barefoot enemy hiding in tunnels and using 12 year olds to blow up Allied troops in bars and streets ! Why do people think the US was the ONLY Allied Force in Vietnam ? Hate to sound unpatriotic, which i'm not ! But you would think the Governments around the World, particularly the US would have learn't from that by now !

VC and NVA were soundly defeated at almost every encounter. Political micro management from the top and a citizenry that tired of the war is why we quit. Do a little more research on the Vietnam war, but not on some liberal website.

If you look back, Vietnam is considered the only war we "lost", and look at the times: late 60s/early 70s. What else was happening at that time? Hippies and liberalism. That same thing is happending today, and a lot of college students now-a-days get off by watching Forrest Gump and all those movies that take place in the 60s and want to protest. It's really funny: they wear the green army jackets and have the long greasy hair and beards. A lot of hispanic kids are doing it in Los Angeles now, always protesting this and that and "take it to the streets!". Old hippes are now college professors and like to show old documentaries.

Why would you like to be at war with Vietnam now?. Vietnam is living at peace with its neighbors. The Vietnamese economy is a burgeoning market economy. There are no terrorists there. The Vietnamese never imposed their ideology on other nations, nor are they a threat to anyone. They are not aspiring to develop nuclear weapons. So, can you give one valid reason to wage war on them?. But of course, if any foreign power attacks them, they have the right to fight back and defend themselves... And there's no doubt that they will do it, no matter how much it takes.

America cannot defeat Vietnam now because US soldiers are not good in guerilla and urban warfare. Look at Iraq now, American troops cannot annihilate the insurgents because they lack skills in this kind of war.

Only if America is in reality as great as it thinks it is, but it isn't all that great. Looks at how the Iraqi war is going. It can be considered a "Vietnam" type police action.

America could have defeated the north viet Cong in 1973, the problem was not technology, it was politics, Much like we are facing now with irag. When american soldiers start dying in big numbers politicians get worried. In Viet Nam the outcry from the public caused us to pull out. Had we continued to bomb north vietnam they would have succumbed. History tell us we had them defeated, but politicians and the public outcry because we were fighting a war that no one knew the reason for. Winning the war is easy, winning over the people is the hard part.
