There could be many reasons, but looks aren't even in the top 10. There are plenty of "less than attractive" people that have mates.
If someone is "middle aged" and is single, then they are not trying, either because they want to be single OR they are shy, scared, or ignorant of what to do.
They probably have some serious insecurities. Once they realize how wonderful they are, and we ALL are in some way, then she will find someone.
I hope she doesn't wait too long.

I doubt that you're ugly. You just haven't met Mr. Right yet. Sit back and enjoy life and see what happens. Theres also EHarmony and Match.com if you want to explore online dating. Being single still doesn't mean anything. Good Luck hun
