by "brand" i mean touching the skin with 1000 deg f (red hot) pieces of metal to cause a skin burn, which will later heal to form a design on the skin. Although painful, "branding" has come back over the last 20-30 years, but is not as popular as Tattoos.

I've known many men and women to have done this for their sorority/fraternity. I can't think of a good reason to brand their skin, but to each their own. In the case of the fraternal orders, I believe it is expected of some in order to show their loyalty to their organization.
