Is it take one or two every 4 hours, or take 1 or 2 every 6 hours?

I've been taking 2 at a time every 6 hours.

I ask because my bottle just says "Take When Needed" & I dont want to accidentally take too much.

Thanks in Advance.

Usually the limit is if you have some paracetamol (acetaminophen) mixed in with the vicodin - which you might not (I am not sure about your preparation so look on the label).

Most doctors would be okay with you taking it as 1-2 tablets 4 hourly, but make sure your paracetamol (or acetaminophen) does not exceed 4000mg per day.

The usual adult dosage is one or two tablets every four to six hours as needed for pain. The total daily dosage should not exceed 8 tablets.

When I had back surgery I was told I could take 2 5/500's every 4 hours. After my surgery to repair my failed hernia surgery I was given 10/650's. Those 10/650's are potent little buggers. The dosage above applies more for the 5/500's. Even the 7.5/750's recommend only one every four to six hours.

You can take up to 4000 mg of Tylenol in 24 hours, so since each Vicodin tablet has 325 mg of tylenol (acetaminophen), you can take up to 12 tablets a day which equals 2 tablets every 4 hours.
The problem with Vicodin is it has Tylenol in it, and there is a limit on how much Tylenol you can have in 24 hrs. Many people become addicted to the Hydrocodone in the Vicodin, and it makes it a hot drug on the market. Just be sure you are using it for pain and not to drug yourself up.
PS: I just read up on how the guy who answered above me got so smart. He says he is an ER MD. He did answer correctly, and seems very knowlegable, so he probably is.
I am a RN and work in a hospital.

Read the bottle closer. It probably says to take a certain number of pills every certain number of hours "as needed". This means that you take no more than that number of pills no sooner than that number of hours if you need it for the pain. You can take it less often if the pain has subsided, but don't take it any more frequently or you will overdose. If your bottle truly only says "Take When Needed" and nothing else, then you need to get ahold of the doctor that prescribed them and find out for sure what your proper dosage is. Vicodin is a very powerful narcotic and should be taken with care (and NO ALCOHOL).

I was told only to take it when I can't tolerate the pain. Also I believe that every 4-6 hours is a good gap.

it comes in various strengths - probably the most commonly used is 5/650. The dosage you have is fine also.
