This site explains why the birds sing at night.
Some do it as a reaction to a disturbance, or to a predator. Some species are nocturnal and will only sing at night (Whipoorwill, for example). Some sing because street and security lights make bird think it is dawn and time to announce its territory.

It is a very good chance that it is a Mocking Bird. If the bird is gray and it is a little smaller than a Robin then it is a Mocking bird and that is your singer. It is spring time and they tend to sing all night during the mating season.

its not that often to hear bird chirping outside, usually they do it beginning of spring when the mating is high
usually bird wake up and begin singing at the dawn of day or even like 30 min b4 it. even if u dont see any day light yet, its really dawn. only cuz things blocking light.
