I am looking for a class, a workshop kind of class in Woodland hills for learning oil painting (landscaping). I don't have any experience in this area but I would love to try it out. Do I need to begin with basic drawing? Do you know a place that I could check them out? Found one, which costs me $300, a month and they start from the very beginning. I hear that I don't need to learn something else for beginning the oil painting... is that not true? I am confused!

The only thing I can suggest that would be in the Woodland Hills, Sherman Oaks or Encino area would be the Los Angeles Academy Of Figurative Art. They teach every aspect of painting for artists at every level. They also offer 'open' classes where you can take just a specific class to learn a specific skill and they also offer weekend long classes. In other words, with them you don't have to take a drawing class first before you take a painting class.

Here is their phone number: 1-818-708-9232. They are located over on Saticoy.

You can pick up more detailed information about them over at Continental Art Supplies on Reseda. If you've never been to Continental you should check them out. They are the best art supply store in the valley. But, they aren't open on Sundays.

Painting is easy. Getting good at it just requires a lot of work. Ask your teacher what to bring. Some workshops include all materials..others you have (can) bring your own.

As to your subject. That is up to your tutor/teacher. You could get a head start by making some drawings of landscapes...from real life or pictures, just to get a feel for it.

Good luck and enjoy.
