I can certainly sypathize with your problem. I have a Samoyed who is scratching so much his hair is falling out and his skin is bright pink. It hurts me to see him as he was beautiful before this started.

I also have tried everything, but will give you some of my remedies and maybe they will work for you. I was against steroid treatment as he is only 1 1/2 years old. Once you start them on steroids it is hard to keep them off, and as with adults there are side effects. My vet recommended we try histamine treatments for a month. I give him the tablets twice a day. I suspected that the baths he had at the vet dried his skin out. I bought an oatmeal based shampoo and his hair looks much better and is not dry anymore, but still itching. I am giving him skin and coat vitamins, and cod liver oil capsules to help mositurize and make his hair grow back healthy. Also feeding him canned salmon twice a week mixed with his dry dog food.
Another thing that I suspected might be the problem is a grass allergy. This can be so irritating to their skins. Anything you try will take a while to work so be patient and keep plugging away. My next step is to take him off of the dry dog food and feed him chicken and rice as a substitute. It is just a process of hit and miss until you find the right combination. Might try baby powder and baking soda on his bottom to soothe the irritation.

In any case, GOOD LUCK. I know it hurts you to see your pet miserable. We all consider them one of our family. Hope this helps and gives you some options.

My dog has food allergies too. I tried Natural Balance until it was recalled. It didn't help my dog. I'm using an organic brand now that is GRAIN FREE with fish. Check with your vet and local smaller pet stores. Be patient, it can take several weeks to notice a difference when you switch the food. Have you tried hydrocortisone cream on the hot spots? I use regular over the counter cream from the drugstore. You can also put some cornstarch on the areas to help soothe the area after you apply the cream. My vet gave me some great spray for my cat, so definitely check with the vet too.

I am very sure the vet will find fleas on the dog, since this is the number one reason for scratching, and going bald from scratching.

What do you flea treat your dog with? Unless you use a proper medicaton (something from a vets) regularly then basically, your dog WILL have fleas. Sores and scabs usually mean the dog is allergic to fleas, which is treatable simply with regular flea treatment to avoid the cause of the allergy.

I long ago lost count of the amount of people who came in with a scratching, balding dog, claming it didn't have fleas, either because they use some pet shop crap or because 'she doesn't get fleas'. Yes she does - let me show you.

I'm glad you're going to the vet, get them to talk to you about good flea prevention.

Well, some dogs do have allergies. Mine had the exact same problem, he would scratch until he bled. Like you I changed his food, medicated shampoo, etc. and nothing seemed to help all that much. I then took him to the vet and had him tested for allergies. I found out that he is highly allergic to dust and dust mites. He is now on allergy medication and it has really helped.
Allergy testing can be a bit pricey, but it's money well spent.

Take the poor guy to the vet, something is clearly bothering him!

I was going to say that it might be allergies, but after reading your description I think he might have worms since he's scrathing his bottom primarily. Still, get him to the vet soon.

Try switching to science diet z/d, it costs a little more than d/d but it works. Ask the vet about steroid shots, particularly depo/vetalog and check your pet for fleas.

Sounds like a flea allergy.. Vet can help.. I wouldn't bath him all the time tho, that's only going to irritate and make things worse.

My Corgi has a similar trait. She has an overabundance of yeast in her skin. We all have yeast (hence yeast infections) and it can cause a dog (or person) to become very itchy.

It sometimes appears as dandruff, part your dogs hair and see if you can see a white dusting or flaky residue.

You can try itch relief shampoos to relieve symptoms.
