This is not true. Any body who is a believer in Christ can cast out a demon. That is just a false doctrine which has been taught is some Catholic church. Read your bible in Mark 16:15-18. The Lord Jesus said these signs will follow those who believe......in My Name they will cast out demons. The Lord Jesus makes it clear in that passage of scripture that whosoever believes and is baptized will perform all these miracles accopanied with the signs. He says, "whosoever". Not just the priests, but "whosoever".

Just as only a priest can hear a confession or celebrate a mass only he has the power to do a exorcism.
Here is what the Catechism says:
1673 When the Church asks publicly and authoritatively in the name of Jesus Christ that a person or object be protected against the power of the Evil One and withdrawn from his dominion, it is called exorcism. Jesus performed exorcisms and from him the Church has received the power and office of exorcizing. In a simple form, exorcism is performed at the celebration of Baptism. The solemn exorcism, called "a major exorcism," can be performed only by a priest and with the permission of the bishop. The priest must proceed with prudence, strictly observing the rules established by the Church. Exorcism is directed at the expulsion of demons or to the liberation from demonic possession through the spiritual authority which Jesus entrusted to his Church. Illness, especially psychological illness, is a very different matter; treating this is the concern of medical science. Therefore, before an exorcism is performed, it is important to ascertain that one is dealing with the presence of the Evil One, and not an illness.

the statement is false.
many religions preform exorcisims. of places, and bodies.
i have done several successful exorcisims of homes and places..after many (including Catholics) have tried. and i am Pagan.
i have seen Medicine men drar evil out of people. and many asian priests preform their exorcisims.
however the Catholics would have you believe that they are the only ones that can do it.
most other christians deny tha fact that it is a needed service.

I don't know where you heard that. In fact Satan isn't impressed by denominational titles. Or shaking rosaries. He responds to anyone who knows there authority in Christ. And for that matter the word excorcism doesn't appear in the bible.

perhaps because they are the only ones left who believe in it... since the advent of modern psychiatry there haven't been any need for exorcism. But they do make for awesome scary movies. ;0)
