We knew each other 4 years, we dated 8 months before getting engaged. We were engaged 6 months. We picked a date with a couple weeks, we had to decide what would work best, I have no clue how some people say they picked a date right away but maybe I'm weird. It wasn't that big of a suprise honestly, it was around my birthday & I knew something was planned & we had already talked about getting engaged before the winter & having an early spring wedding. I told my parents first.

We dated for a little over 3 years before he proposed. I knew our relationship was headed that way, but it was still a surprise!
Our engagement will be about a year in a half. We set the date about 4 months into the engagement.
If there is a date you want, or your having a short engagement, then go ahead and set the date! It will help when looking for locations and vendors.

We dated a year, engaged for 9 months, set the date about 1 month into the engagement.
The engagement wasn't a surprise, we talked about it before hand and I knew he was buying a ring for me.

We dated about 18 months before getting engaged, we'll be engaged for a year by the time we're married, and we set a date within a few weeks (we had to wait for the airlines' schedules to catch up with us-destination wedding), and the engagement was a surprise-I loved that! I called my mom first, followed by everyone I knew!!!!

We knew each other a year and dated for two after that. We were engaged about 8 months. We set a wedding date right away - you're not officially engaged until there is a date!
Yes, it was a surprise - we both knew we were going to get married, though. Told my mom first.

We met Memorial Day weekend, got engaged Labor Day weekend, got married December of the NEXT year. We set the date right after we got engaged. The engagement wasn't a surprise and my girlfriends were waiting for us at a club down the shore so they were the first people to know.

We dated for 3 months before we were engaged, our engagement lasted 2 months. We originally chose the date within the first 3 days we were engaged and it was for a year later but we ended up getting married on the same date of that year instead because he was being deployed. The first person to know was my sister because she and I are very close. I know it was quick but i have no regrets. I knew he was the right one so why delay?!

We dated for about 3 years before he proposed
Our engagement will be about 1 1/2 years long.
We set a guesstimated date about two weeks after the proposal and the final date a few months after when we were talking to the reception/ceremony site.
My engagement was a surprise. A whole LOT of people knew before me (fiance called my dad to get his blessing and he told mom who told bro and bro's g/f, fiance told his work and his parents). I called mom and dad to let them know I said yes.
(BTW you are engaged as soon as you say "Yes" to his proposal. None of this "you need a date and ring" "requirements".)

Husband one: I dated on and off for 5 years, we were engaged one month. We sat the date the day we got engaged. No I was not surprised. I told my sister in law first.
Husband two: We dated about 4 monthes, got in a fuss, he asked me to marry him. I said yes, told my children first. Then I set the date.
I am now divorced from #1 and about to divorce #2.
