Did you see pus in your throat when you looked? if so, you may have strep throat and you'll need antibiotics for that. I would advise you to go see your doctor in any case, just to be sure.

Gargling with salt water is good and also pain relievers. Taking Ibuprofen (Advil) is best for inflammation. A lot of the pain you are having is from inflammation. If you still feel terrible, you can take tylenol at the same time, that is better for pain.
I used to get those bad sore throats too and sucking on Sucrets helps. It actually numbs the throat a little.
Another very important thing to do, whether or not you have an infection, is to drink PLENTY of fluids. It is amazing how much that helps...in healing and in feeling better.
Infections can clear up without antibiotics, but it takes MUCH longer. However, the reason it is a good idea to get antibiotics is the danger of complications, if for some reason the illness gets worse.

I used to get sore throats alot. Gargle every 1/2 hour for a few hours with warm salt water. It helps alot. Then take pain reliever for the ears and throat pain. My hubby likes to suck on the throat drops not cough drops when his throat hurts. If you don't feel better go to urgent care in the morning the regular doctors office probably isn't open or you might wait till Tues. if the pain isn't too bad and call the Dr for same day appointment. Hope you feel better. If it is strep throat you must get antibiotics if not it will start to feel better with the warm salt water.
