I have a chihuahua and usually when she wags her tail it seems as if she smiles but I am not sure. Do dogs smile?

Yes, some of them do smile. My housedog smiles in two ways.... sometimes she shows her teeth and other times she curls the sides of her mouth up.
And, along the same lines... dogs also laugh. Next time you are playing with your pup or he is enjoying something take notice of how he is "panting." Its actually what is considered to be their way of laughing.

Do Dogs Really Smile

Well I believe that dogs do show many emotions and react to situations in a variety of ways. As with humans some dogs are more serious in nature while other dogs tend to be carefree and happy.
I guess you will just have to give it a try. Smile at your dog and see if he doesn't smile back. As the old adage goes "frown and you frown alone, smile and the whole world smiles with you!"
Always remember that your connection with your dog is unique so if you believe that your dog is smiling at you don't let that belief be shaken by anything or anyone. But don't be disappointed if you never see your dog smile, just remember that if you show him love, he will respond to your love in the best way that he can.

Yes and No. They just had a special on the discovery channel regarding wolves and domestic dogs. The smiling you see isn't actually a smile. It is a submissive response to the alpha being there. Regardless of what you are doing, i.e. petting, rubbing their belly(which is the most submissive behavior of all), or scolding them.
People, sorry, but you need to stop anthropomorphizing animals. They may act in ways that we interpret or recognize as a human emotion or expression, but in the dog world it is much different.

Yes, I know of dogs who smile. My Pyrenees bares her upper front teeth when she is very happy. Some dogs raise their lips up like people.

I like to think that they do!! it always makes my day a little bit better, to think that my dogs are happy, as I am. I have a mutt, and a purebred siberian huskey, they are both so loyal and great, I like to think that they smile, yes!!!
