I want to go to med school and I want to be a psychiatrist, but I don't know what I have to actually do? I am currently attending college and getting an undergrad in psych. Any suggestions would be of great help. Thanks!

You just need to finish your bachelor's degree and all the med school requirements. You then need to apply to med school after taking the MCAT, and if you are lucky enough to get in, you do 4 years of med school. When you are done, you then get to do a residency in psychiatry. After the residency, you can practice medicine on your own.
If you stay in psychology, you can just finish your BA or BS, and then go to grad school to get your PHD or PsyD

Yes, you have to go to medical school to be a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist is just a doctor who specializes in mental illness. Meaning that you won't provide any sort of therapy aside from drugs.

If you want to do clinical counselling, consider being a psychologist instead.

Both clinical psychologists and psychiatrists are qualified to diagnose mental illness.

To become a clinical psychologist, continue taking psych courses and apply to a clinical psychology graduate program and complete a Phd. To become a psychiatrist, you'll need to do your undergraduate reqs. for med school and apply to medical school. During your last year of med school, you'll get some psychiatric training, basically 'Don't give a patient more than 10 minutes, 5 is ideal. Recite the exact working of antidepressant commercials like Zoleft ie. depression may be a chemical imbalance in the brain. This will confuse patients into thinking that their illness is strictly physical and you will have them dependent on you for years to come. If said patient is weary or educated about depression, diagnose them with bipolar disorder and tell them that the only way to live a sucessful life is to be on medication that you prescribe thus dependence on you once again Cha CHING!'

I think, now it is better for you not to go to med school at this stage. You could start med school after 12 grade.

To be a psychiatrist, studying at med school is not important at all. In your masters, you can get a masters in clinical psychology, that will work for you to be a psychiatrist. Moreover, the most important issue is your interest. Get reading books on psychology, behavior.Observe people and crisis of lives.

Psychiatrists take pre-med courses, complete medical school, and become medical doctors first, then receive several years of additional training and certification in psychiatry.

Clinical psychologists have PhDs in clinical psychology. Some counselors have masters degrees in counseling or social work.

sure, comparable standards.. yet a psychiatrist and a psychologist are broadly distinctive. The psychiatrist in basic terms handles the medicinal area, assessment, keeps the affected person on aim, etc. Psychologists can't prescribe meds, and are in certainty communicate-scientific care--man or woman, kin, couples, and team.

Yes you do. If you don't want to go to med school you can consider becoming a counsilor or somethign of the sort. You have to go through med school to become a psyciatrist because they perscribe medicine and legally, only doctors can perscribe medicine. You should talk to you advisor at school and he/she will help you find the correct path. Good Luck!

Yes you do. You should speak with a career counselor at your school so you can make sure you take all the right classes. But I know you have to go to med school because my daughter looked into it as well.
