I was just curious about this, and I have asked several people but no one has been able to give a plain, logical, common sense answer: If you get a license, you can carry a gun under your clothes, under a coat, etc., but not in plain view, like at your waist (like in a holster). But if Americans have a right to bear arms, why aren't they allowed to carry guns in plain view?

Wearing a hand gun in plain sight would defeat the purpose. If you were to hold 5 people hostage and 1 guy was wearing his gun on the outside you would take him out and you could assume that the hostages would all be disarmed. Not being sure of this fact since all 5 could be armed, you probably would rethink you commission of this crime. The concealed carry has probably saved many would -be outlaws because they rethought the crime. I mean would you pull a bank job if you didn't know how many guns would be pointed at .you if you turned your back for 2 seconds? Sure as heck, not me.

Yeah, most people freak out when they see guns, there is really nothing you can do about that. There is no reason why you cant keep it concealed and readily available in case you need to use it. The only reason I would see you needing it in plain view is to show it off. I also live and florida and took the concealed weopon permit and nowhere did they mention you could have it in plain view, even if its in a holster, it MUST be concealed.

The only logical answer in my mind is because showing a gun in normal grocery shopping, crossing the street and eating dinner at a restaurant is innappropriate. There is no need.
If it was a cattle moving day at a ranch and there are some threats of a hmmmm think think- ok some snakes coming out of the tall grass to bite the cattle, well then it becomes appropriate. However, the stampede that would ensue will guarrantee you will never work there again. LOL
Think about it, when would the occasion to use a gun even come up? If dinner was slow in coming, maybe you'd whip it out and say "Maam, let me shoot the critter fer ya". in your best cowboy drawl.

You should be able to carry gun in holster on hip. The constitution gives American citizens the right to bear arms.
You need to check with local law agencies and obtain a copy of law in your state.

Depends on the state. Some states allow people to open carry without a licence. A couple of states don't violate the constitution and allow people to carry however they believe is necessary.
Then there are some states no matter what you can't carry period. (IL for instance)

Well for one, if you think about it, it would be extremely unnerving to see people walking around with weapons holstered at their sides.
Second of all, for security reasons, like your own, hiding it will always leave doubt in the other persons mind (robber/terrorist) as to whether or not your carrying a weapon. And to lesson the likely hood of some unauthorized person grabbing it away from you if it we non consealed.

the sight of a gun might cause a public disturbance at a public venue, such as a mall or a movie theater... the scare would be even greater if the gun-bearer appears suspicious, which can't be protected against by law..
That would be my best guess!

Every state has its own laws. States like CA and HI dont allow it at all, while you dont need any permits, licences, ect in MT and AK.
