50 min ago...hopefully this person is either extremely tolerant of the alcohol, threw it up, or got to a hospital.
Very dangerous situation
Alcohol poisoning is drinking more alcohol than that persons body can detoxify which can kill. Large quanities in short amounts of time will definitely do it.

Alcohol poisoning happens when someone drinks a large amount of alcohol in a short period of time. November 15, 2007: Volume 34 #23 For example, alcohol poisoning could be caused by: • binge drinking (having more than five drinks at once) • drinking games • funneling • chugging. If an individual drinks too much too fast, the amount of alcohol in the person’s blood – blood alcohol concentration (BAC) – rises to a high level very quickly. A BAC of 200-300 mg per cent would likely cause alcohol poisoning.

Everyone is different as far as their tolerance, but a half a fifth in less than an hour is a lot, even for those with high tolerances. It is very possible to get AP drinking this much so quickly. As far as prevention, DON'T DRINK!! That's about the only way to prevent it, realistically! And yes it is common for people to poison themselves with alcohol. Usually it is the young inexperienced drinkers who get brave and stupid and end up in the hospital or dead from killing their liver.
If you drank enough to feel like you are going to be sick, this is the first stage of AP. You body is telling you that it can't get the alcohol out the normal way so it sends it back out the way it came in. For those who keep going even after they get sick, they are tempting possible death. How can drinking be considered fun after this?? What's the point of drinking til you are sick? Isn't this alcohol abuse/waste? Why buy it so you can puke it?

It depends on the person. I'm 5'8 and 125lbs-- I can drink a bottle and a half of 80 proof rum and not get sick, and barely a hangover. However, my best friend who is 5'8 and about 150 lbs drinks 4 beers (which are all about 5 proof) and passes out.
So it just depends on the person. Drink LOTS of water afterwards, the reason you get a hangover is because you are dehydrated. And to prevent alcohol poisoning, just drink till you're drunk (assuming you're of age lol) and stop. It's not a hard thing to do unless you have a drinking problem.

Many kids have died from that. Induce vomiting immediately. Your should probably go to ER. But, vomit now.
PS: Depending upon how long ago it was, it may be too late to vomit. Also, 1/2 a 1.75 is a lot more alcohol than half a 750 so you should let us know what you actually ingested.

from my *ahem* experience, that wouldn't do it. Alcohol poison requires substatial amounts of during a long period of time like an entire night.
