The Mazahuas were once a part of the nation of the Otomies, as the languages of both nations are but different dialects of the same tongue; but this diversity between two nations so jealous of preserving their idioms uncorrupted, is a clear argument of the great antiquity of their separation. The principal places which they inhabited were on the western mountains of the vale of Mexico, and formed the province of Mazahuacan, belonging to the crown of Tacuba.

I thought a website on the Otomies might get us to the larger group Aztec, Maya, etc. It didn't, but this is an interesting site, which includes myths, as well. http://66.218.71.231/language/translation/translatedPage.php?tt=url&text=http%3A%2F%2Fredescolar.ilce.edu.mx%2Fredescolar%2Fpublicaciones%2Fpubli_mexico%2Fpubliotomies.htm&lp=es_en&.intl=us&fr=slv1-

By the middle of the Sixteenth Century, the Tarascans, Aztecs, Cholultecans, Otomíes, Tlaxcalans, and the Cazcanes had all joined forces with the Spanish military. By the time the Chichimeca War had begun, the Tarascans and Otomíes, in particular, had already developed "considerable experience in warfare alongside the Spaniards." As a result, explains Mr. Powell, "they were the first important auxiliaries employed for entradas against the Chichimecas."

The Mazahua are the most common native (non-Hispanic) language group, or culture, in Mexico. They migrated to Central Mexico during the 1300s. Gonzalo de Sandoval brought them under control of the Spanish, and Franciscan missionaries converted them to Christianity. They were apparently neither Aztec nor Maya.
