Hmm, I am wondering where your child learned that word. Little kids only repeat what they have heard others say...so perhaps you might inquire where they heard that word. Explain that it isn't polite and confront the source.

The only way to fight ignorance is with fact. Give your child an age appropriate dissertation on the fact that people are people. God made us all different colors, etc, etc, and it's not a bad thing. It is a bad thing to treat someone different because they are a different color than us.

I would tell the child the meaning and intent behind the word emphasizing that it is a word that should not be said but also let them know that yes some people still say it but that does not make using it OK. I would try to do this in a way that doesn't make a big deal out of the fact that they said it as well because depending on the kid and whether or not they understood what they were saying making a big deal of it can reinforce the use of it.

To the rest who answered little kids hear things out on the street, from friends, it is not necessarily the parents who they got it from. I once had to explain to parents of three year ODs how their kids learned the F word from another 3 year-old at the daycare I worked at.

You can teach your children that the word N I G G E R is bad when spoken by someone who isn't Black; you can teach your children that it is always bad, and spoken by ignorant people.
You can make it SO terrible that they will be scarred every time they hear the word throughout their lives. Or you can teach them that old saying of, "sticks and stones.....", which I think is best. It's a WORD. We have become so politically correct that too much emphasis is put on the use, and non-use of that word. It really is time to get over some of it, as it ISN'T going to stop. Black perpetuate the word in music, cinema and comedy. Whites are going to continue to use it because it irritates Blacks so much, and some people like to have that power.

How about teaching children to be good, get an education, take care of their own back yards and grow up to fit into society in a constructive way instead of playing the "poor me" and blame games.

you say " I don't see a n igger." and act like they are making stuff up.
If you don't make a big deal out of it, they won't think anything else about it. If you make it into a scene and give them a slap on the wrist, you seal in the fact that it is wrong, and as a kid they will be using the word as much as they can when grown ups aren't around.
It's like the button that says 'do not push'.. as soon as no one is looking it gets pushed. Kids are itching to be rebellious, and if the word n igger is never singled out as a bad thing, most likely it will be forgotten, at least until they are old enough to understand the offence some take to it.

You should raise your child to know thats wrong from the beginning. That way, hopefully, you will never be in that situation. But sometimes, kids, say things, that will make a parent turn red. You gently pull your child to your side and out of the crowd, and very firmly explain your feelings on that word. And then you make the child apologize.

Tell them that that is not polite thing to say and never to say it again or they will be in trouble. If they are old enough look up some websites for them about racism and slavery in north america so they can learn the history of the word and why it is so hurtful and has a negative condentation. Also, if you have not started already, teach your child about respect for every human being no matter their gender, race, orientation, religion etc. Teaching him/her about respect is one of the best thing you can do for your child.

A young child should never hear that word to repeat it. An older child who may have heard the word outside the home would be taught that it is totally unacceptable to use that word. I can't see this happening.

wow, i would tell my child, that word is completely inappropriate to use at any time, for any reason to any person. i live in the south and unfortunately there are still many people here that use that word, and even more so when i was growing up, my mother always instilled in me that you are to never use that word. it is probably the worst word in our vocabulary. as a parent you just have to make sure your child knows that words can hurt and that not all people understand that. let them know that they have to be the bigger person. let them know that there are ignorant people still in this world.
