How big must the gap between rail sections get before it's re-aligned?

I hear the trains on a CSX track rolling over the gap in the rail and I'm wondering if it makes the crew a bit nervous.

Actually, a fairly good size chunk of the ball (top) of the rail can be missing and the equipment will still make it over it. But, if I remember correctly, I think 4" is the max, but a defect this size would be corrected immediately. The train would only be allowed to pass at less than walking speed, with someone from MOW watching.

When traveling at 'Restricted Speed', you are required to be "on the lookout" for broken rail. Rarely does one see broken rail. You hear it. Here again, if watched, a train will be permitted to proceed, under supervision, and if the break is on top of a tie plate or tie.

When dealing with the gage of the rail, I seem to remember 2" is the max............

Joint rail sometimes have 1 1/2" - 2 " Gaps which will flatten the rail ends, I seen 12" missing in the ball rail in the center of a train, and walked the rest of the train over it so it could be repaired.

This problem should be becoming more of a NON issue especially on main lines where the rail is welded and there are no gaps.
