"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

I've loved that quote ever since I found it in a pro-gay quote website. I'm pretty sure he wasn't talking about homosexuality when he said it though. Does anyone know why he said this?

I know what the quote means. I just want to know what it was from and what he was doing when he said that.

I looked long and hard for an answer for you!!! I don't know if Dr. Seuss truly said this quote. It is certainly attributed to him on countless personal webpages and quote sites, but never in context or with a citation. It's certainly not found in any of his well-known childrens' books. I looked in about every single of his books on Amazon.com that has the "search inside" feature for "mind" or "matter" and the quote didn't come up. (I found "A person's a person no matter how small" in Horton Hears a Who, and a few references to making up your mind in various places.) So, either Mr. Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) said this poetic inspirational thing randomly in passing and someone wrote it down, or there was a game of cyber telephone and somehow Dr. Seuss' name became attached falsely and every other person who came across it took it as fact!

he probably didn't have any particular thing in mind but it is a major self-confidence boasting quote. Dr. Seuss changed the children's book industry by doing what he loved and doing it in such a unique way. he probably got criticized at the beginning for his ways but in the end those critics didn't matter

Great line. I can only guess at what the good doctor really meant, but on the face of it, it would seem to suggest to suffer ignorance and smile; whereas those that understand you would not cause you to suffer. I am certain, however, that Dr. Seuss was not talking about gays.

that is a great quote. it really gets u thinking. i think it means that u shold b yourself and dont care what others think because if they care they dont matter and the people that matter dont care. it is a great quote about not being afraid to be who u are.

It seems simple. If a person objects to your being you then he is probably a hypocrite, fake and a bigot, so he does not matter anyway. And those who are not hypocrites and fake people, will never mind to face the real person in you.

If you are yourself and say what you feel, people who make judgements or (mind) on what you say are the people who should not matter in your life. The people who really matter in your life wouldnt make judgements on you(mind), they would love you regardless.

hmmmmm, ok first of all he writes childrens books that rhyme. and second you know he's not really a doctor, right? Its just a title his mother gave him. Are you just looking for an excuse to validate yourself and say to heck with everyone else? Because sometimes those who do matter....actually mind!

It means.....
Be Yourself.
Say What You Think
Don't Worry about what others think about you
Because those who mind, don't matter
And those who matter to you, won't mind if you speak your mind and be yourself
