Possibly because US troops were not (technically) engaged in combat in the Philippines since 1945, but were stationed there as part of a treaty with the independent Philippine government following independence. Troops stationed in Korea are still considered to be in a combat zone as there has never been a peace agreement signed, only an armistice. To my knowledge there are no Amerasians in Cambodia as a result of the 1970-75 conflict as technically there were not any combat troops stationed in Cambodia during that period. The US troops invaded in 1970 and were "in country" for only six weeks (although there had been numerous incursions and bombings into NEUTRAL Cambodia since 1965). There were countless thousands of Amerasians in Vietnam and Laos because of the war and in Thailand because troops were stationed there assisting the war in Vietnam or were directly involved in bombing missions.

The answer to your question about becoming prosperous and getting better education applied to all countries, that is, it depends on your financial condition. There are no hindrances to them if you have the drive and wherewithal. The Philippines have universities that are respected throughout the world. Just get the kids to the right university. And as for becoming an outcast, it depends on the social circle you are going around with. I had 100% Spanish and Chinese and mixed races classmates and mixed race as teachers in grade school, high school and in college in the Visayans, 100% Americans, Korean, Vietnamese, Iranian, Indian, etc. and mixed races in another College in Luzon and I have not seen a single incident of discrimination. Am I blind? No, I think it is the crowd the person is around with and behaviour of the individual that encourage being outcasted. Of course there are flippant jokes about other races such as an American, a Filipino and a Mexican were going to ....;.etc. Now, there are always people that are not polite as mentioned in the previous answer above - about the girls in SM. But they do not represent the whole country. In the first place, there are very few Filipinos that can call themselves pure-bloodied. Most Filipinos have either Chinese, Spanish and Indians in their blood. Chiniese, because they have been trading in the Philippines when they used to be the greatest seafaring country centuries ago and some stayed and took natives as wives where some were taken back to China. When the Spanish came around the time they had Mexico, they fathered children with the natives and then the British came with Indian soldiers when they have India and all the indian soldiers were left in the Philippines when the British departed. We have not even considered the rest of the neigboring countries. And now historically more recently, Americans when they took over the British and specially after World War II have many light haired mestizos born around the American bases.

Arrrrrrgh!

Because, at the time of WW 2, the Philippines were a US territory (commonwealth) and therefore the citizenship of the Amerasians was decided when they were given full independence in 1946.

The other Amerasians you reference were born during/after later wars and citizenship was offered in agreement with those countries respective governments under the various SOFAs. (Status Of Forces Agreements). Each country has its own SOFA, that is why there are differences in the citizenship.
