I just saw that statistic on a TV program that is a tribute to our military. It talked about the damage of TBI, Traumatic Brain Injury. As we could expect from history after other wars, there is a horrific lack of medical care and a terrible toll on the families fighting red tape to get treatment for their injured loved ones.
Recently, I attended a lecture on what to expect from those returning who have PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This war is not going to be over when it's over.
I agree with Colin Powell when he says we should suport our troops, and years ago when he referred to invading Iraq as "you break it, you buy it". Unfortunately, he also gave a speech supporting Bush and the other war mongers.

I am a member of Blue Stars Mothers of Active Military Members. It is a non-political organization that supports the troops however we can.
Two days ago, the son of one of our local members was horribly injured by an IED in Iraq. So sad. We must insist that he and all the others receive the best medical treatment possible for their physical and mental injuries.

We have a proud and professional military, just as our law enforcement and fire fighting personel are. For the most part those on the front lines of wars, crime and disaster don't want your sympathy or whining. Just your backing.
The troops came home from Germany, France, the south Pacific , Viet Nam and Korea and went back to doing what they had been doing before their wars started. My father still carries shrapnel in his leg. An uncle was there when our men entered the Nazi concentration camps and had nightmares for years. A bother in law sloughed through the jungles of Viet Nam. His memories are horrific. It wasn't until that small segment of our population, who want to surrender all our freedoms, came along that we began to doubt ourselves. You refer to our president as a warmonger, but if his predecesser, the ever charming Bill, had been doing his job and not let the "bad" guys get away with killing Americans overseas whenever they could without fear of reprisal, we probably would not have had the horror of 9/11.
Do a little more study and get the whole story. Believe me when I tell you that the troops know that if they do not hold the line overseas, their parents, spouses and children will be living in a very ugly world in a few years. Read a little about how well the French have done trying to avoid fighting back. In every war, there are tragedies, police and firemen die while doing their jobs, families are left behind. It has been that way since civilization began. The Garden of Eden is a long way behind us, so don't expect a tea party. Life hurts.

If that is true , then it only shows how detached to the war the American people are.
We have a military at war , but our country is not.
Breaking news nowadays is a car chase or an OD'ing celeb.
The war gets like 2 minutes of news in a complete broadcast. Just someone saying "oh and today in Iraq 3 soldiers were killed" then its over.

Being critical of deaths and injuries resulting from the Iraq invasion in no way minimizes the importance of those dying from other preventable causes.
I have not seen any negative comments about our going to Afghanistan. Sometimes we have to fight, and sometimes we don't.
Hopefully, we will never again be so gullible as we were when politicians told us we had to invade Iraq, and both parties voted to give Bush authority to do so--based on lies. Or, maybe it was apathy on our part that let them lead us like sheep into war.

Your casualty figures have been out there for some time.
An increase in traumatic brain injuries as compared to other conflicts is expected as well due to the increased life saving capabilities the military has, the body armor being used reduces the number of other types of trauma to the body, and the nature of the weapon of choice (IED's) of the opposing force. As for 'horrific lack of medical care' you have not researched very well. Military hospitals are rated equivalent to or better than civilian hospital when in come to treating trauma injuries.
I find it disappointing that you had to include that final sentence to attempt to politicize the issue.

According to the Army Times (14 May 2007) the number of wounded is 25,090 and the number killed is 3,347.
Even WW II produced quite a bit of PTSD, it just wasn't often discussed back then and it was a "popular war." You are correct, no war ends when the shooting stops.
For your political comment at the end, just remember that both parties supported the war at the time.

Ms.Barbara, sounded like you wanted to ask that q just to put down Pres Bush.
One the other hand do you know how many people are killed each year by a drunk driver.?
Do you know how many babies are aborted yearly?
Do you know how many children are orphans?
Do you know how many people do drugs?
Do you know how many people die from doing drugs, and drinking? I can go on and on........
Why don't people get concerned about other happenings in this world that are just as important? And complain loudly about those things? U know Barbara?
