First of all let me start by saying that I am married to a tattoo artist and I have 11 HUGE tattoo's. I can answer your question quit easily, NO!!! NEVER get a tattoo wail under the influence of ANY drugs, prescribed or not!!!!! The problem with pain killers as well as alcohol is that they naturally thin your blood, make you bleed more!! Also, when ever you are under the influence of anything that is considered a drug, you tend to focus on what is going on around you, you pay more attention to what is going on and you can not ignore the pain.
Take it from me, you DO NOT want to use pain killers!! Depending on your threshold of pain, most tattoos are a mild burning sensation and a minor annoyance. If you do not think you can get a tattoo with out them, then don't get one!! On top of that it is illegal in most states for a professional to give you a tattoo when you are under the influence of anything that is considered a drug! You could very well cost your artist his license.

I don't really see what it's got to do with your family, since you're the one getting the tattoo. But anyway, there's a cream you can have applied called amatop, the tattoo artist can tell you about it, they apply it for about an hour before you get the tattoo and it numbs the area some. I've never used it myself so I can't comment on how good it is. Personally, I'd just tell them to get lost. They're not getting the tattoo, you are. But obviously you don't want to do that, so tell them taking something could cause more harm and risk that anything and wont actually numb the pain anyway.

No. Any reputable tattoo artist wont tattoo someone if they know they have taken any pain killers or have been drinking. Some pain killers thin your blood and it just doesn't work ... When you take pain killers and get hurt after wards the pain is more centralized than it would have been since your nerves are numbed (to a point of course which is why you feel localized pain). Don't do it, just go in calm, eat a good meal, take water or a juice or something healthy with you that you can drink from how you are positioned. It's a good idea to take a friend with you though if you can, talking keeps you distracted and you wont think about any pain as much. But mostly it's a dull itch (that like the rest have said you get used to after a few minutes) except for long lines and anything near a boney spot. Don't worry, you'll do fine!

Not a good idea. Plus, pain killers do not work on tattoos and piercings unless it's a topical cream.

No it's not....in addition, many artists will not work on you if they know you took anything....
Some pain killers often thin the blood too...this will make the tattoo process take longer than needed and will potentially affect the outcome of your tattoo...
It's really not that bad....feels like bee stings, lots of bee stings. After a little bit (about 5 min) - your body adjusts to the feeling. It never goes completely numb but it's not so bad....

You certainly do NOT want to take anything that will thin your blood, like aspirin. Some people take Advil or Aleve, which are not thinners. You can also ask the tattoo artist for some topical Novocaine. It has to be put on your skin at least 30 minutes before the artist starts.
The degree of pain from a tattoo depends on where you get it. The fleshy fatty parts of arms and thighs are not as bad as thin spots like ankles, or the stomach. If you are a girl, rethink getting a tattoo on your tummy. If you have a baby, the pregnancy and stretch marks totally ruin it. Have fun.

When my aunt got her 1st tattoo she didnt take painkillers and she complained that it hurt really bad, so for her next tattoo, she took painkillers and said it still hurt pretty badly. Where you get the tattoo will probably be the biggest pain factor, since some areas on the skin are more sensitive than others.

Do Not Take Pain Killers! Take it from a proffessional, if they even suspect that you are under the influence they will not take you, pain killers, alcohol, weed or anything like that thins your blood, which makes you blled alot! Just dont be a pie about it and get it done, its not that bad.
