I had a 64 drum brake, king pin bettle with a 1600cc twin port up to 90 miles an hour, just like riding on air. My 75 1800cc twinport Combi managed 96 miles an hour(160kmph).

This was years ago but it came to mind just them.

Damn I had fun in VW, back in the day that is. I also had a 59 with a tiny 1200cc it was good to cruise on 75mph all day. thats as long as the hills wern't to steep and the weather wasn't to hot.

I had a 70 Beetle and drove it at 90mph for a few hours, not a good idea!! The oil was literally bubbling out of the filler cap and into the carby.

Another funny story is my dads deisel Golf it started to run of oil that had gathered in the intake somehow it just kept accelerating...my younger brother was driving and had to foot brake the car to halt the motor.

I had a '59 vw van that I had modified with later (full syncro gears and a 1600 engine with bigger cylinders and pistons.

I got that thing up to almost 90 one time going down I5 in California.. long and straight and nothing in he way (I might have had a tail wind.. who knew). But it flew..

Now I have a 71 beetle that I have restored. It will cruise at 70 all day except in high altitudes .. then it drops like a rock to 50 going up hill (but then there is the other side of the crest and its back up in the 80's (grin).

Thats the nice thing to remember about beetles..be nice to their drivers you pass going up hill because you will see them again on the downhill side.

I did 78 mph in a 58 bug down a long hill. That also has been some time ago. Back in the mid 60's.
