Child Identification?
My ex has requested that he get our sons S.S# and birthcertificate to obtain an I.D for our son, siting that he was afraid he would go to jail if pulled over. We are going to be going to a hearing soon, he isnt listed on the birth certificate however has been adjudicated the father. I appreciate his concern and told him I would be contacting an officer on tues. to see how to get an I.D, I still dont feel that unless ordered in court to give up this information to him that I really dont want to out of concerns for what it really will be used for. I have a lot of trust issues with him and I am not sure what my rights are and dont want to make a bad move at this point. Does anyone know????? Please give advice!

Well, I don't know your rights but I have an idea. Why don't you go down with his birth certificate and social security card and issue him an ID? That way it doesn't need to be brought up in court and it's taken care of.

If you don't know--IDs are issued at the DMV in your area just like licenses. You can get them for infants even. I'd go there and ask about it before I brought it up in court.

He's probably not talking about a rinky-dink school ID. At the DMV they issue IDs that will trace him back to his dad if they were to be pulled over. In order to do this they need the SS card, birth certificate, and any other paper notifying that he is the dad. This way he's happy, your happy, and none of that information HAS to be shared. [Unless he's lying.]

This way the only reason he'd need a copy of the birth certificate or social security card would be something other then what he said therefore making him stuck between a rock and a hard place!

Best of Luck!

I have never needed my son's birth certificate or social security number for an ID card. It sounds more like he wants it so that he can use it when he files for taxes. If you work, do not give him this info as only one of you can claim your son a dependent each year. You are right to wait until court.

As the father he is legally able to obtain his own copy of the birth certificate as far as I know. He should also of course have a copy of any health insurance your son has.

However the SS number worries me. I would talk to a lawyer about it if at all possible.

Instinct is telling you not to. I don't believe he is concerned about what he is saying is the reason for wanting this ID. I am sorry that this is going on on top of everything else you have to deal with being single mom. Men are weird sometimes. He might be afraid of you taking his son away. but don't give in to him. You gotta be a b****, because when we are nice they think we are up to something. And thats because that is exactly what they do. You are woman, roar baby roar!

Just so all your answers aren't negative about the father. If any kind of bank account, or other investments are made in the child's name, the Social Security number is needed. Who knows, he might want to start a college savings account for his kid.

you can't claim a child as a deduction on your INCOME TAX RETURN (federal OR state) without a social security card or number.... so you best get one ASAP... also, the father is LIABLE for support and if you know who the father is, you should go to the department of children and family services and get that money from the biological father..IF he is the biological father, you are ENTITLED to child support payments to you FOR your child until he or she is 18 or in college... Don't let yourself life in poverty unjustifiably if you don't have to--get the biological father's financial help NOW!!!
