My son got straight A's in all of his classes except for Language Arts. He got an F in that. As a result, the school is holding him back, which I think is totally ridiculous. I would like to work on his skills over the summer. What are some good sites where I can find Language arts lesson plans for 6th graders? I have found some, but they either require a fee, or they are for much younger children. Also, what do you suggest we do? Worksheets? Try to read more books?

Assess where his problems are-- has he always had problems in this subject? If not, maybe there was just a failure of communication with his teacher and you just need to go over some things with him again. If he's just unclear on something basic such as parts of speech or punctuation, you can probably go over these with him this summer and use work books sold in book store chains, find some websites that have free printable worksheets, play mad libs, get some educational software focusing on grammar, things like that. If his problem is in reading comprehension, it may require more exploring and work, maybe even an assessment by a professional-- though if he's doing so well in all of his other classes, this may not be the case. If his problem is writing, go over his past essays and writing projects and assess his weaknessess, and just work on them by doing a lot of writing exercises-- again, workbooks and websites with writing exercises can be found with a simple web search, and there are many books in the library to help improve writing skills.

What is his weakness in Language Arts?
If it were me, I would go to the teacher and ask for workbooks and textbooks to be used over the summer. If there is a damaged book, she could give it to you rather than throw it away. You can take the summer to let your son retake the lessons.
Sometimes educational links are posted on the school website.
Check out the Glencoe website.
