I was raised Christian... Church 3 times a week, revival every time a local church had one, VBS, I even went to a Christian grade school... the whole nine yards. I believed it for a long time, because it was all I had ever been taught. There WERE certain events in my life that led me to examine what I believed, but those events specifically didnt cause me to be an athiest. What I found when I closely begain examining what I had been taught and asked to believe, it didnt make sense. While the Bible does have some uplifting parts, I disagree with a lot of the things it teaches and condones. On the parenting board I really dont think its necessary to go through whole debate, but my main objection to Christianity is philosiphical. After leaving Christianity I have looked at Wicca and a couple of other religions. But, there is still no evidence that such a God actually does exist.

Sweetheart, I am a good person because I choose to be. I have high moral standards and my ethics are impeccable.
Here is the kicker : No one has to hold eternal damnation over my head in order for me to choose to live my life in this fashion.
Atheists and Agnostics posess the ability to think outside of the threat bubble provided by the Christian faith in order to keep the followers in line.
Also, there are millions and milllions and MILLIONS of people who feel just as strongly as you do that Christians are going to hell. So if your game is covering all your bases, best be getting a few Buddha statues and bowing to Mohamed a few times a day.
Sounds to me like you are a weeeee bit on the spineless side and your motivation is way off.

how ignorant! How about being christian, i lose my free will, my sense of reasoning (b/c anyone who actually looks into those beliefs will not hold them anymore), i lose my basic freedoms (choice, freedom to be me, freedom of beliefs, speech- see blasphemy).
Also aside from not making any sense at all, the idea that someone made me and put me on earth with the whole goal of my life being to worship him and do what HE wants me to do, ignoring what i want to do just pisses me off to no end. If i am on earth, i will live MY life not someone elses. I will not worship, honor or obey someone else just so i can get the candy at the end of the stick (heaven) or avoid capital punishment (hell). If he/she was that great and loving, wouldn't i want to do it anyway? But no i don't
There are also very practical reasons why christianity is not the safer option. Depends on the type of person you are but if you'd rather live in delusion then i guess it suits you but i'd rather live my life banking on the real and reliable and therefore making real life plans to help me through the troubles i face in life than relying on god saving me.
Really, how is christianity the safe option other than the fact that it gives you the ticket to ignore real life and live in delusion? It's like falling into a lion's den at the zoo, looking the lion in the face and then telling yourself it does not exist.

umm theres a big prob with your question.
So scaring a bunch of ppl will lead them to Jesus?
That's ole time religion.
Why can't I chose to do the right thing by my brother, whether he is christian or not. Why can't I chose to give food to the hungry whether he is christian or not? Why do i clothe the naked. whether he is christian or not? Why do I always chose mercy over self determined dogma or not? Because I am human, and have been there, done that.
If I go to hell because i gave, then there is no god. I gave a cup of cold water to a child, I believe in Jesus.
I just believe that your jesus is too dogma minded and forgot the mercy and love in love in what he taught.

Maybe it's not as scary to them because they are being honest with themselves.... they aren't being hypocritcal in their personal ethics and beliefs.
While I'm an atheist or an agnostic, I'm a Jew.... and I would never betray my inner honesty for 'what if'. That's not healthy IMO.
Don't get me wrong, those that find the Christian faith true for them are blessed... but I would ask them the same thing if they were only Christian to 'be safe'. How can that be healthy?

no in fact you are wrong. if you only claim to be Christian because you fear hell. then you are false in the eyes of your ever loving lord. and you will land right beside darwin and his cronies in hell.
if you tell anyone about Jesus when you yourself really do not believe, then you are a false prophet, and dammned even more.
worse yet if you figure 2 hours every sunday for an average human life. that equals an entire year of wasted time. when i am 90 i am sure that i would give many things for another year to see the birth of a grandchild or to play with said grandchild.

Actually, if you're a Christian and there is (for example) really an Islamic God, you're going to Hell. If there's a Jewish God, you're going to Hell. Essentially, the only way you can "be safe" if you're a Christian is if there is a Christian God or no God.

I wonder if Blaise Pascal's family get royalties everytime someone uses his wager to make people believe in God.
Yes the theory behind this wager is right. we have nothing to lose by believing in God. But which God should I believe in? What makes the Christian God anymore real than the ancient Greek god, or the Japanese God?
I would rather offend the real God by not believing, than really piss off the real god, by falsely worshipping another.
Perhaps we shuld all live by the Atheist's Wager:
You should live your life and try to make the world a better place for your being in it, whether or not you believe in God. If there is no God, you have lost nothing and will be remembered fondly by those you left behind. If there is a benevolent God, he may judge you on your merits coupled with your commitments, and not just on whether or not you believed in him.

What if Muslims are right and everyone else is going to Hell?
You can't live your life believing in a God out of fear. You have to do your own research and find out what makes the most sense to you. For me that's Atheism. Is it a little scary that I don't know what happens to me when I die unlike Christians who believe they do? Of course, but I'm not going to live my life worshiping some magical man in the sky to better my chances of having a nice afterlife (which I don't believe in anyway). I have better ways to occupy my free time and I'd rather not be blinded from the truth.

It is a free will choice to believe in God, but please, not just as a safety net...in case. If you choose to be a Christian, it needs to be because you truly believe, and you truly feel your Faith and want to be part of a belief.
I yell, scream and get after people sometimes, I am fair, as many Christians as atheists, lol...but listen, I love you...even not really knowing you I do...and I really feel that way. I want for everyone what is good and best and right...but that is your decision, not mine, so please, make it for the right reasons and forget Pascal, lololol.
