No such thing as gay friendly restaurants. All restaurants are gay friendly especially on the upper west side. You only find gay bars. Restaurants are just general for everyone. Sitting here with a few gay people, some from the west side, so I guess you can take it from them.

Manhattan in general is what I'd call "gay tollerant." A place might not be gay friendly, but they wouldn't object to seeing two men or two women holding hands over dinner.

If you're looking for a lot of gay friendly restaurants, especially in the summer, go down 8th Avenue in Chelsea. (8th Ave between 14th Street and about 23rd Street). The entire stretch is lined with gay friendly restaurants and most have outside seating so you can sit outside and watch guys stroll by.

Also, there is a stretch of restaurants in Hell's Kitchen that are very gay friendly along 9th Avenue.

I hope you have a great time here! Regardless of where you go to eat, you'll realize that in NY it doesn't matter if you're gay or straight, you just blend into the crowd.

There are not as many gay friendly restaurants on the UWS as there will be downtown.

And by "gay friendly" I mean mostly likely gay owned & operated, with a mainly gay wait staff and of course, great food in a fabulous environment!

Chelsea is probably your best bet, not too far from the UWS. Lots of places on 8th Avenue between 23rd & 14th. Definitely check out FoodBar!

A little closer is the very gay stretch of Hell's Kitchen on 9th Avenue between about 54th Street & 42nd Street. Eatery and Vynl are both great.

Are you going there for dinner or to find a pick up? Honestly! I have never had to "tell" a waiter I am gay or straight. I have never seen a restaurant that has, "Smoking, No Smoking, Gay" sections.

you mustn't care, you're actually not a 2nd classification citizen. you're in NYC, not Appalachia! pass the place ever you like. they're probably purely finding because of the fact you're making them sexy and jealous.
