I read that an oz. of whiskey contains 74 calories, but no fat, carbohydrate or protein? If that is the case, then what do the 74 calories consist of? It can't be sugar because sugar is a carbohydrate. Or am I wrong?

If whiskey/vodka/rum/etc. had sugar they would have carbs, and they have neither. Alcohol burns, so basically it has calories, as "calorie" is a unit of heat. Your body metabolizes the alcohol, but it does not affect your blood sugar nor does your body use it as energy or store it. The problem with the hard alcohols, despite 0 carbs, 0 fat, and 0 protein, is that the body treats it as a poison, so the liver goes to work on it first at the expense of its other nutritional functions. This allows weight gain / inhibits weight loss. Still... hard alcohols in moderation are better relative to weight loss than other very-carby options like beer and most mixed drinks.

The calories are from alcohol (7 calories per gram). Because the body has no metabolic need for alcohol, all of these calories are empty calories.

Alcohols are similar to carbohydrates, having carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, but are different. The body burns alcohol, hence the calories, but as efficiently as other nutrients.

they are empty calories, they have no nutrients or lipids or anything in them. that what makes it so bad for you because your just taking in calories that do not help you at all.

it should be carb...but yes they are empty with no nutrition value...I would use them eating fruits and vegies...or even cheese....
