I gotta agree with some of the others. Make sure that car is in tip top shape before you throw real money at it.
As for performance upgrades, You will notice greater improvements in engine responsiveness by lightening any rotating parts such as flywheel, drive shaft, crank shaft, & pulleys.
Then you should make it breath better by opening up the valves and porting and polishing the intake (Take to competent machinist)
Then you can get into the real ricer stuff such as LSD's (limited slip differential), CAI's (Cold air intake), HFE's (High flow exhaust) EMS's (Engine managment systems) and so on.
Make sure the Injectors are cleaned and tuned to get the same fuel delivery and PW (pulse width) from each one! You just don't realize how important fuel delivery is for a vehicle. And THEN you can make that pump gas even better by using ONLY Pure Escape by Chevron, this additive is the only one that has been proven on an accellerometer to improve launches, and performance.
To raise the value some, make sure any body work that is needed is done, and have a fresh coat of paint put on it. (If needed) Looks are everything when it comes to car values.

Another Nissan tech chimes in. Yes do all the suspension and minor engine work. Then figure out how fast you would like to go. Upgrades to the brakes are an easy $3,000 new Japan Turbo motor another $3,000+very nice 18" rims shod with bridgstone performance tires there go's another $2,500. Or sell the old paint to someone with time to take the car off the road for a year and modify it. Then go out "think of how you would look in a new 350Z" And with the money above put a 7 to 9 thousand down payment and be driving 306 hp coupe. With Warranty

To start with, I'd recommend getting the car BACK to "as-new" condition. This means a full tune-up, all new fluids, replace all rubber hoses and bushings, filters, and other maintenance parts. This will also allow you to become more familiar with the car and its components.
You can download a Factory Service Manual at http://www.240sx.org and then start browsing the "how-to" articles at http://www.240sxTech.com .
From there, here are a TON of companies that make performance parts for the 240sx: http://www.nicoclub.com/addirectory.shtml
Or, you may choose to go with used parts: http://forums.nicoclub.com/zeroforum?id=43

There's many preformance parts..but...
If you want that top speed and acceleration fast like a nascar..then either get a...
turbo
cold air intake
Racing Chip
If you want that smooth ride get a..
Suspension kit.
racing springs.
But for a nice combo, i say get the suspension kit, racing chip and maybe an HKS exhaust. :)
