I thought perhaps it was a sign of respect, but I've been wrong before. The only time I've ever seen this was at the end of hte movie "Shindler's List" when all the REAL Jews that the REAL Shindler saved visited his grave (he's buried in Israel, I think) and each left a small rock on the tombstone or grave. That's why I thought perhaps as a sign of respect.

It is traditional to repair any damage to a grave every time you visit. Putting a stone on the tombstone symbolically represents repairing the gravestone.

it really is a mark of appreciate. There aren't any flowers at Jewish funerals and is it no longer a custom to carry them to beautify the grave. only a small stone from the floor to instruct you've been there and to instruct that this man or woman become loved/respected. The more advantageous stones that are there, the more advantageous human beings have visited.

Visitors leave a stone to let others know they were there and that the grave's not abandoned.

I was told once that they were left there for good luck. I'm not really sure though.
