I tried connecting the red and white plugs into the red and white dvd holes in the back of the home theater system

is there anyway to hook it up?

You need a special hook up for phono or it will not work.
If your home theater does not have one then you can go to Radio Shack and buy a special device for phono hook up, tell them you need to get a pre-amp hook up for phono connection to your receiver.

You need a RIAA phono stage pre-amp between your player and the HT system - output of the record player is too low for HT or any other line level pre-amp to work with.

Depending on a cartridge, you either need a MM (moving magnet) or MC(moving coil) phono stage.

You can buy one on the net - new price ranges from (what I could find) $75 to $15,000.

Here is one for $75 http://www.musicdirect.com/products/detail.asp?sku=ABELVP29

decrease back contained in the days many audiophiles used "pre-amps" with their phonograph turntables, to advance the point of output, if their receiver did no longer have a outfitted-in phono enter pre-amp, for list gamers. An exterior achieveable be extra on your component gadget, once you've separate elements, plug it into the wall, upload your pink/white cables from the list participant (audio enter), and then have yet another set to run from the pre-amp out on your receiver enter. Make experience?
