i went out to eat at a very nice place but the waiter had this arrogant attitude as if my party and myself were beneath him.
We payed our bill and waited and waited for him to return with the change which he never did.Should I have sought him out to get the change it was so obvious he thought we might not leave a tip which is so stupid although his service was not good and that arrogant attitude it was really like for some reason he didnt like us it was sooo wierd!
Im still mad at myself for not confronting him! What do you think i should have done?
thanks

Definitely speak to a manager/supervisor! I am in the service industry and by no means are you to not give change back on a check unless the host specifically tells you to keep the change. This being a very nice place as you stated, that should never happen. The fact that the waiter kept the change shows that he is not a professional and should not hold the position that he has, and if he did this to you he probably practices this with others, and the managers need to know. His boss will appreciate your heads up on the situation and make things right with you at the same time. You should never have to ask for your change back, put up with a snotty attitude, or have to tip for bad service. Even if I think that I am not getting a tip, I never ever just keep the change, even when I have bent over backwards to ensure the patron has a great experience. It sounds like you are a pretty reasonable person because you imply that you would have still left a tip even after the snotty attitude and you are the type of customer that others on the staff would appreciate having.

First of all I am so very sorry you had such a bad experience while trying to have a special occasion.

I would go back to the restaurant within the next few days and ask to see the manager. Explain to him exactly how you were treated and say to him, "we came here to because we had heard through many of our friends and coworkers that this establishment was known for not only its food but its outstanding service. I would think that you as the manager would want to know that you have people here who do not live up to your restaurant's reputation. I felt strongly enough about this to take time out of my day to let you know so that this doesn't happen to someone else. Stay calm and matter-of-fact, don't scream yell or be angry, just tell him what happened.

You don't have to confront the waiter (I wouldn't have. he is irrevelant) I would talk to his boss. Trust me, after your talk with the manager, either he will be asked to leave, or he will NEVER pull this again.

The next time this happens leave 2 cents for a tip. If you leave nothing they might think that you simply forgot to leave a tip. You will be out 2 cents but at least the waiter will get the message.

I would've asked to speak to the manager. There's no excuse for not returning your change or treating your party poorly. Perhaps the manager is not aware of this and someone needs to bring it to his attention. Service like that can really have a negative effect on a restaurant's bottom line.

I would have called the police and reported the theft of the money to them. Let them deal with the owner of the place.
We will see who is "beneath who" - at the county jail.

I would ask another waiter/waitress to send the manager to our table so that I could speak to him/her.

You should have said something to a manager that you were still waiting for your change.

You should have contacted the supervisor of this snobbish waiter.
