Walk. I am serious. Anyplace less than 45 minutes away should be considered a nice walk. If you need company and can get nobody to go with you get a dog. Take a ball and teach it to fetch.

The thing is that weight gain or loss is governed by the balance of calories burned to calories eaten. Athletes eat huge meals. But because they put out a lot of effort training they don't get fat.

(If you want to see rapid weight gain though look at athletes who are not competing anymore or retired construction workers. They are no longer burning up the calories but they are still eating them)

Yes, the first thing is to start walking. Later come weights or running. Swimming is good too.

Be careful about your idea of overweight. Young women are supposed to be a bit "Jiggly" and anorexia is a terrible disease. Over the web I have no idea if you need exercise or to be told to just relax and buy bigger bras and pants because women are shaped like that.
I had a niece that went anorexic, it was painful to watch.
Check with your Doctor before starting on a weight loss program. OK.

Look, if you are hungry you should be eating. There is a reason for hunger.
Starving yourself will never work.

Eating plenty of good food and getting active does work though!

First of all you need to discipline yourself. What I mean by that is teach yourself to eat healthy. You need to cut out the fried foods and start baking, broiling, or steaming. If you have a bad day (cheating), pick yourself up, brush yourself off, and start over again the next day.

Salads make a nice meal, especially with summer here... you can add lots of different things to them like chicken, shrimp, or turkey. Have cereal with fruit for breakfast along with some dry toast or bagel. For lunch you can eat tuna or turkey sandwiches. Eat healthier snacks like microwave popcorn, yogurt, pretzels. It is important that you eat 3 meals a day, just watch the fat grams your consuming, also don't forget to drink lots of water and exercise... even if it's just taking walks!!

Just a little FYI... I wouldn't get on the scale and weigh yourself every day, some days it says we've gained a couple pounds when all we're doing is retaining water. I would however weigh yourself before hand so when you do get on you'll know what you've lost, that'll keep you motivated!! Remember, go slow.. you didn't put it on fast and you won't take it off fast either... Good Luck!!

Since you are so young and still growing I suggest eating 6 small healthy meals a day and add a couple of snacks (healthy of course). Drink lots of water, which will make your stomach feel full. Also ask your parents to help plan a good exercise program for you. For exercise I mean at least 1 hour of vigorous (steady and challenging) exercise every day, including the weekends. Choose exercise or sports that you enjoy doing and will get the most benefit.

Here are some good resources to start your nutrition and exercise program. Use these resources to get some ideas on food, fun and exercise.

Good luck!

Try to be more active. Do you play any sports. If not, why not try jogging after school. Maybe you can get a friend to go with you to keep you company, or use an mp3 player. Start slowly, and work your way up. I wouldn't suggest dieting, especially being a young teenager, because you will only struggle with eating less for the rest of your life. What you need to do is deal with how you are burning the calories. Just be happy with who you are, and be comfortable with yourself and your energy level.

When I was 13 I gain alot of weight fast my body was changing and I really didn't have a clue. Within the year the weight went to all the right places and it wasn't excess weight. Maybe your body is preparing yourself for woman hood. If you are truly concerned about it talk to your doctor or an adult woman you can relate to. Get good healthy advice and stop stressing about it at 13. Stress gives you wrinkles. J/K :)

You have an eating problem if you cannot control your eating habits. At 13, I suggest you talk to your parents and ask them to help you with this problem before it turns into a life-long problem.

You need to find out why you are doing this "emotional eating". It is taking the place of dealing with problems, usually. I strongly suggest you and your family go for counseling, together, to work this out. In most cases, the whole family has issues it needs to deal with when a child has a problem. Take care, be well and get help.

Dieting doesn't mean you eat less, it means you change what you eat. It has to be something you can live with, or you aren't going to stay with it. Exercise is good for its own sake, but you can't really lose much weight by exercising because you probably won't stay with something that requires so much hard work. It really does take a prohibitive effort for most people to use up the calories they normally eat, and lose weight without adjusting the number of calories they're taking in. Do it in small steps you can live with, but this is what you want to cut out: refined carbohydrates, fats and oils, and salt. If you like milk, use skim. Or work your way down to it. If you use sour cream on potatoes, get used to fat free sour cream. Fat free artificially sweetened yogurt. Instead of butter on a baked potato, a light drizzle of olive oil and some spice of your choosing (I grind fresh pepper on). Go with vegetables low in calories instead of the extra helping of mashed potatoes and gravy. Sprinkle with garlic powder (not garlic SALT) or a salt substitute spice blend if you want extra flavor. The Atkins diet works, but it's extreme and can be boring for some people. And so it can be hard to stick with. an ice cream freak? Try switching to Italian ice. It has sugar, but sugar is a carb that has fewer carbs per gram than fat. Or fat free frozen yogurt. I'm not going to tell you it won't take an effort, but it can work as long as you find things that don't leave you hungry.

You will have to become your own dietitian, counting calories to know where they come from and where you can cut them by substituting other foods. All while still eating foods that are healthy for you, supplying vitamins and such.

Cutting salt is likely to be the hardest because you aren't cooking for yourself, but it yields the quickest payoff. Most of us carry from a few to several pounds of excess water simply because we eat too much salt. Processed foods are bad for that--TV dinners, pizzas and such. If you look for "healthy" frozen dinners, compare the labels with the regular. They cut the fat and add salt. So they aren't healthy at all.

The bottom line is, no fad diet will take the place of educating yourself about the food you eat. But if you do that, you can be where I am--middle aged, sedentary, I should be fat, but I'm solidly in the normal weight for my height.

I wish you lots of luck with this. It really is worth the effort. You don't have to suffer. Do you like fries? Tell them you need to have them BEFORE they throw the salt on. If it makes you more comfortable, tell them you have a heart condition. If you're using ketchup, that has plenty of salt in it anyway and you won't miss what they don't throw on. I add pepper, but that isn't to everyone's taste. If you get a fast food sandwich, tell them to leave the sauce off. Or get two simple hamburgers, it's usually a healthier alternative.
