Hmmmmm, tricky. I would say that those willing to leave the "civilized" countries of Europe, where there WAS no religious freedom, learned to survive on what materials were available. If that meant cooking your perch on a fire made of buffalo chips, so you could say your Quaker-style prayers without being arrested, so be it.
Eventually, as the different religious communities came together to fight off the British, they realized they had all come to dine on fish cooked over buffalo chips, and pray as they pleased to bless it, so they realized that everybody needed this freedom. Then they made it into a law, called the First Amendment to the Constitution.
