Okay, so I'm an atheist. Formerly a Christian--that was a miserable experience for me. However, I have been attending church with my Mormon friends and some of their functions, and it makes me feel very peaceful, in way I can't explain. I'm going to read the Book of Mormon this summer, but I do have trouble understanding that type of language. Is there any good supplement to it? I have so many questions about LDS but wouldn't want to ask until I was more knowledgeable. I really want to read the Book of Mormon so I have read the core of their beliefs, but I just want to make sure I understand. Any suggestions?

Well, if you want to read a few good books concerning the LDS Doctrine and belief, I recommend

1. Gospel Principles by The church of Jesus Chris of Latter day Saints

For deeper reading:

2. Jesus the Christ by James E. Talmage

3. The Articles of Faith by James E. Talmage

4. Doctrine of Savation Volumne 1-3 by Joseph Fielding Smith

You can get these from deseret books , or LDS distribution centers. If you do not want to spend the dollars, ask the members that have it and see if they would let you borrow it for a few days.

Well, there's Mormon.org, a website set up by the Mormon Church to explain the basic beliefs of the Church. Another good site is LDS.org, which is the Church's official website.

Another good resource is to ask your Mormon friends, or have them introduce you to the local missionaries. (After all, if you want to learn about accounting, the best place to go to is to someone who's an accountant and who teaches the subject, right? It's the same thing here.) While the missionaries will at one point ask you if you wish to be baptised into the Church, there's absolutely no obligation to join.

Ask the LDS missionaries to visit you and explain your concerns. They will do it in a peaceful and calm matter. The language in the Book of Mormon is similar to the wording in the Bible. You will need to read both.

I'm happy for your progression in this mortal life. Stay on track and you will never regret it.

I am glad to hear that you really want to investigate this religion before you jump into baptism. You should know that you won't learn about the Mormon doctrine by reading the Book of Mormon. There are many who leave Mormonism and become atheist. They learned that they were lied to and were crushed.
I would suggest that you go to sites that are pro-Mormon and sites that are not so pro-Mormon. The Mormons are not going to tell you the bad and ugly things about their religion. They are going to tell you all the nice and pretty things. You won't buy a car without checking it out first. You can't trust the sale man to tell you if there are any history of problems with that make and model of car. It's good to talk to someone who has or has owned that type of car in the past. If it turned out to be a lemon you have a right to know why before you would buy it.

The Church run websites lds.org and mormon.org are great sources of information, as are your friends and members of the congregation. For reading the Book of Mormon, I would suggest the Reader's Edition (linked below.)

As you read and learn, I encourage you to pray to your Heavenly Father for a witness of the truthfulness of the things you understand.

Read the Kings James Bible. What Joseph Smith didn't realize is even in the 1800's, we didn't speak "King James English". But it sounded a lot "holier" to him.
My suggestion: What is it that made your "christian experience" so miserable. Let's start with that instead of reading fiction.

Your best bet would be to speak with your friends ask them to explain the things that you do not understand.
Above all you need to pray and ask the Lord for peace and calm. The Lord will not answer you with loud shouts of nay-sayers, but he will put peace and calm in your heart. You need only to listen to the Lord, the still small voice of reason and love, for God is love.

Wow I could not agree with Mike M more! He is right, fix up what is wrong with your christian experience, the mormon church is not a christian church and therefore you are selling yourself short.
